Great review as always @jonoslack

was one of the field testers too for the 35mm Summilux f1.4 Steel Rim and also have the original one (without Goggles). The rendering is very very close although I prefer the glow a bit more of the old one.

Leica M10-R with reissue Steel Rim 35mm f1.4. Btw sizes are different and shade of the new one won't fit the old one (as with the 50mm f1.2 reissue).

Erm - where did you get the idea that the lenses being sold to the public don't have the screw -

I have a lens which I bought from series production (not a beta lens) and it still has the thread in the steel rim (E46) this is really useful, as it means you can screw in a filter with or without the lens hood . .

Or am I misunderstanding?

Hey Jono, post #51 refers to four screws, which might be part of the hood? (post #53).

I decided not to buy another lens with an infinity lock, after briefly owning the 35 Summaron f2.8.  Not a fan of those.

Yes I was referring to these 4 screws that were holding the front of the lens together, it felt strange they were there but these seem to have been removed / covered or whatever leica does here…anyway looks much better without them and it’s just like every other leica lens.

I was not referring to the filter thread, which this lens has, both the prototype and the production unit : )

I did have a prototype for about 6 months, but I never noticed the screws (maybe it was an older prototype), but like all such things Leica wanted it back and I don't have any pictures of the front.

best

It’s in the cards. I must get that new lens!

Just received my steel rim yesterday. First impressions are that it is wonderfully small, looks nice (but that’s really irrelevant unless one wears their Leica as jewelry), wide open it has good/high resolution in center which drops off gradually off center. This latter characteristic is different than Noctilux 1.2 reissue where resolution drops off quickly off center wide open and then actually recovers a little midway to the edges, it’s not just field curvature, it’s not resolving well at any distance wide open in the middle 1/3.  What this means is that on the 35 steel rim wide open you can frame a subject off center (within limits)  and still enjoy good resolution, whereas with the 50/1.2 framing off center, wide open is problematic. I also have a 50/f1 ver4 which has a touch less high resolution wide open that the 50/1.2 but holds it farther from the center than the 50/1.2.

The 35 steel rim, like the Noctilux 1.2, when stopped down a little sharpens up smartly throughout the frame allowing you to dial in the look you want. With an M11 and an electronic shutter capability you can leave you ND’s at home on even the sunniest day.

My 24 hour review of the steel rim reissue is a strong thumbs up and I’m looking forward to giving it lots of use.

for those of you that already have this reissued version of the lens, do you find that the aperture ring has a bit of play, it does click well as you rotate it but in between it feels pretty loose?

Yep. Feels like that to me.

Does anyone know if we will need to wait for a firmware update in order for this lens to be recognized? My M10R can't seem to figure out what lens this is.

Yes, since it's a new code, a firmware update is needed for this lens to be recognized.
