For recording theatre performances I use a separate Zoom H4n recorder, and sync that later with the camera internal mic audio. For interviews etc, I use a Rode Wireless Go. I have a Rode Video Mic, but it is effectively redundant. I don't do run and gun journalism where it might be useful.

Actually the SL2-S and the Røde VideoMicro is a good combination. The internal amplifier of the camera does a great job. But only to record ambient sounds etc. If you need ultimate sound quality you should go closer with an external recorder. One of the nowadays best options for the price is the Zoom F3. 32 bit float recording, no need to worry about gain settings anymore.

Wow ! that Zoom F3 must be as is tiny as a dual XLR recorder can get.

I've not looked at audio for ten years when the Sound Devices 702 was the entry level option for professional field recording.

It would be helpful to know what you are shooting and what you would like to capture sound from. I find the Rode videomic series (I have the Pro+) coupled with the Wireless Go 2 is a great compact 2 microphone kit to cover a lot of my shooting scenarios (mostly documentary, action). The videomic is a great upgrade over the sound from the internal microphone, but is really only suited for capturing ambient sound. The Wireless Go 2 is a versatile way to add a wireless lavalier for interviews, etc, or you can connect any 3.5mm microphone to it for wireless transmission to the camera in a pinch.

Anything beyond these needs and you would do well to look at external mixers/recorders and proper microphones suited to the task. Lots of great recommendations above for this.
