Camera Identification Strategies

Is anyone affixing any kind of personal identification/contact info to their camera(s)?

If, for example, you leave the thing in a restaurant and some nice person picks it up with the intention of returning it to it's rightful owner (it does still happen occasionally), where would they find that info?

I have thought of pasting a little label inside the base, but it might be a while before someone unfamiliar with Leicas would think to look there. Perhaps something stuck on the outside of the base (still haven't removed the plastic from mine). How about a huge luggage tag flapping in the breeze?

Any ideas?

I've gone with the label inside the baseplate for the moment - I also put one inside each of my bayonet caps and in lens caps where there is sufficient space

Leica would engrave your name (and more) into the body (check out there a la carte service at their HP).

Actually I had Leica engrave my name on the top plate. It was quite practical at the recent Netherlands LUF meeting, as there were chrome M8's all over the tables. I would not be surprised if two turned out to be swithed.

One self-adhesive label that I had attached to the inside of a lens rear cap came unstuck, did a half-roll and tacked itself to the rear element. Had to hand in the lens to a competent technician. Beware.

Never had that problem in over 30 years of using such labels in all sorts of climate. However, I do remember having problems *removing* the labels from equipment when I came to sell it... ;)

Perhaps you have all thought of this, but I have recently read about the trick of having a name and address card that you photograph as the first frame on an SD card and protect, so that if your camera is left somewhere, and if someone turns it on to review what you were shooting, the first image is your name, phone number and, most important, offer of a REWARD. Just a thought.

That's an old film strategy to recover films "lost in processing". I remember being advised to shoot the card in the middle of the roll so that there was no risk of it being inadvertently shot on the leader. Ah, those were the days. ;)
