Milan i agree with your statement. sitting here with DMR's i certainly don't think they missed the boat on the image quality , they are the first out of the harbor. so yes some will say they were late to the party, as far as the market timing .Maybe that is true but i would rather see them late than not at all. We also have to remember leica was a film based market for many generations and there film customers are there base. One reason for the DMR setup was one can still shoot film. now they can move on after the success of the DMR and from a DMR owner . I will say it is a success and leave the bad announcment and product delays behind us, that will never happen again. The M8 may not be there first venture but it will certainly be there biggest splash and success for leica. With that will come new and better products for us. honestly i would never have jumped on there boat if i thought for a second they would fail, for a pro to jump in with both feet it is dangerous territory if there is no support and continuation of there product line. i believe the investment i made in them is well founded and I will continue to purchase there products as long as it is a advantage when it comes to image.

Leica's "real" boat is their incredible, unbelievable optical heritage, right down to the modern lenses. Whether one likes it or not, these remain for the better part unmatched and are a testimony to the great minds who designed them and who, later, put computers to superlative use.

It is those who miss this that are missing boats, in my opinion (do not misunderstand that I mean posters on this thread are missing boats; I don't have that impression, but I do know of many out there who cannot see the difference between images made with these optics and other, lesser, systems. Some even go so far as to say that at f/11, all lenses are the same. This is simply not true, of course.).

Best,

Those who don't see differences don't do colour or haven't used different systems i guess.

Now this thread was related to the role of Leica in evolution of photography if i remember well.

From this standpoint Leica did not invent new tools for 70 years at least and the M8 is hardly a new tool IMO so the only role they can play nowadays is to convince people that a clear viewfinder is mandatory (too late...), that some settings must be done manually and that a woman's face does not look like a plastic mask necessarily...

LCT, possibly your best animated image ever... :) - coupled with this: 'and that a woman's face does not look like a plastic mask necessarily...'
