Adaptor noob...

Looking for advice/experiences with R to L (SL2) adaptors.  I know I can stack R/M to M/L.  What does the very expensive Leica R/L get me - just the ability to shoot in aperture priority?  I assume all the other R/L adaptors work fine as long as I shoot fully manual?  I guess I'm asking is there really a difference in quality and function between the very expensive Leica R/L and something like the Urth adaptor?

Thanks

just like the M-L adapter you get recognition of the lens that benefit some lens specific correction, and activation of IBIS. here again the lenses need to have contacts.

I would try the 30$ adapter first and see if that works for you.

I got the Fotodiox one and it is terrible, internal reflections. to be honest I never had a fotodiox adapter that was good, return them all.

R/L adapter will detect lens model if you have ROM lenses. R/L adapter also avoids potential vignetting for longer focal lengths (beyond 180mm) as the opening with the stacked R/M + M/L adapter can cause vignetting on some lenses (mainly more super tele end of things at wide apertures).

Aperture priority and Manual are supported whether you use the Leica or dumb adapter. You can specify lenses in the menu if the lens is not detected. IBIS will work as long as you specify the lens either manually or automatically through reading the ROM chip on the lens

Others have mentioned that, at least on the M/L adapter side of things, if you use a non-Leica adapter, even though you can specify it int he camera menu, it will not save lens metadata unless you have a Leica branded adapter. Probably the same holds true with third-party R/L adapter.

just in time in new firmware

The lens profiles for lenses attached via third-party mechanical adapters can now also be added. The focal length can be configured. This information will be then be written to the Exif data.

▸ Select Camera Settings in the main menu ▸ Select Lens Profiles
▸ Select Other lens
▸ Select the desired focal length

Be aware that with non ROM lenses - although Leica states they should work - one of the CAM levers cause a short circuit with the R/L adapter electric contacts when turning the diaphragm from f4 to f8 or visa versa.  This results in the SL2 to believe an unrecognised lens is mounted.

A stacked R/M + M/L avoids this problem with non ROM lenses.  Leica advises to alter the lens permanently by “cutting” the problem causing CAM lever.  It is my feeling that this can be solved in software.  Why would you have to permanently damage an R lens to make it work on an “adapter”.  The word “adapter” makes no sense here to me.

Hi, I have experience with URTH, Novoflex and the Leica adapter on the T, TL2, CL and the Lumix S1r plus tests on an SL2.

The URT adapter are cheap and that is all what they are. I found that they are not always 100% percent precise and a few time I had to file the mount flange down, since the adapter would not lock on the camera. Have not measured the precise length, but I feel that there are ever so slight variationsbetween batches, since, depending on the lens, the focal point is not always spot on. I further found that with some adapters is slight play between the lens and the mount, which is noticable during focussing. This, I found is not the case on their M>L adapter. The adapters look ok and are fully manual, no ROM lens data transfer.

The Novoflex adapter is more preceise and sits as tight as the Leica adapter. Definately a more precise engineering.

While absurdly expensive, the Leica adapters are what the whole System is, mechanically perfect. Is the price justified? Maybe if you consider that ROM data is transferred, as long as the lenses are coded and the engineering is spot on. But at about 10% of the value of an SL2 is still a bit steep (Australian price base). Maybe Leica would be well advised to offer one adapter M>L or R>L at a reduced price with every new SL2 or SL2s body. There are plenty of s/h Leica lenses on the market and as more the camera is used, shown around, as better the marketing value would be. Being able to pick up some exotic s/h R or M lenses for use with the SL2 would certainly entice more usage, plus making the whole system more versatile.

In respect of the suggestion to stack adapters. I have done this but if you consider that any variation by just 100th of mm on each adapter would add up, you would sacrify the integrety and optical precision of the system. I would not suggest it. If you already spend so much money on a Leica system, it makes no sense to try saving at this stage. It is like buying a Ferrari and putting the cheapest tyres of an obscure brand on it. Wasted money all the way around.
