I've had excellent results in manual mode with a mix of Godox on-camera speedlights like the V860IIN and V350N.  These are for the Nikon protocol but work without flaw in manual mode.  If you're looking for off-camera strobes, the Godox X-Pro N works very well to trigger them or any Godox lights that use their X wireless communication protocol.  All in manual mode, of course.  There is a Leica TTL version of the X-Pro II L hitting the market soon and it should trigger off-camera flashes with TTL (and maybe HSS).  If you want a TTL flash in your hotshoe, you're limited to the Leica SF-40 or SF-60.  I'd recommend neither as they're very expensive for what they give you, as well as the companion Leica wireless trigger for them is also costly.

FWIW, my Lumix S1 uses the 4/3 standard flash setup.  As the SL is based on Panasonic internals, I'd guess that your SL follows the same standard.   I bought an Olympus FL-50 for about $50 and it works natively with the Lumix S1.  It's at least something to investigate further.

MY initial flash solution was to use one of my Vivitar 285HV units on "auto."  The results are pretty much what you get with TTL flash metering anyway, and 285HV's are plentiful and cheaper than dirt.  I also used that successfully with my Phase One XF/DF kit that had yet another proprietary flash setup.

Here's another thread on the subject:

Mechanical shutter is activated? (apologise for the question, but I ask since the electronic shutter was activated when I put on the flash for the first time...)

No it doesn’t.

Leica have their own protocol. Recently opened up and Godox and Profoto are releasing adaptors for it.

Also some of the HV flashes (high voltage) can cook a modern camera.

Thanks Gordon.  FWIW, all five of my 285HVs are well within the modern trigger voltages, although I recognize that some of the earlier ones may not be.
