Worker Ant inspecting dead Bumble Bee

Leica CL / Sigma 45mm L /  Two stacked 4.92 diopter Leitz Elpro 2 achromatic close up lenses (total 9.84 diopers) . Images are cropped.

Experiment to test Sigma 45/2.8 L-mount's close focus capability when using supplementary achromatic c/u lenses. All handheld .

The ant is capable of gripping the dead bee's antenna and pulling it into another position.

New cost of the 7 diopter Leica Elpro 52 used for previous Skipper butterfly photos = £390 - includes leather case and stepping rings.

Secondhand cost of now ancient 4.92 diopter Leitz Elpro 2 is c. £20 - £30 and often much less (I paid £10 for one recently)

Leica Elpro 52 is allegedly manufactured by Marumi.

All the Leica R lens series Leitz Elpros were made for Leica by Agfa subsidiary, Staeble Lens Co., Germany, 1969 - 1990s

IME, the older 1st generation Leitz Elpro achromats enable as good results as the current Leica E52 achromat – and at c. a tenth of the cost (or less) when stacked to equal or exceed the E52's diopter strength. I bought my E52 secondhand as could not justify the £390 cost for a simple achromat plus case and stepping rings.

Dunk, these are excellent.  Did you sedate the insect?

Honey Bee on Blackberry Flower

CL / Sigma 45/2.8 L -mount / Leitz Elpro 2 (4.92 diopter) achromatic close-up lens.   ISO 800  f14 1/100sec.; handheld.

The Elpro 2 has a dual M55 / M44 male thread and requires use of a 55mm thread spacer ring on the Sigma 45mm lens due to the Elpro's relatively deep dual threads. Image is cropped. Ancient c. 1970s Leitz Elpro 2 c/u lenses are relatively inexpensive to buy s/h and two can be screwed together for resultant 9.84 diopter achromat. Experiments continue with Leitz / Leica Elpros attached to L-mount lenses for which additional stepping rings have been ordered.
