I converted the last shot to mono.  Can’t decide either way.

There are some artefacts visible, for instance in the top left corner. It rather seems that parts of the image have become posterized. Upon close inspection, I see the same effect in the colour version as well, even if they're not as striking as they are here. They manifest themselves there as reddish streaks in the blue sky.

The cleanest B/W version I can produce out of the coloured one would be to separate the image into the colour channels and then working on the green component. The artifacts are not manifest in this layer.

Swaddywell Nature Reserve Peterborough UK visit late afternoon 6 Sept. 2024 to observe Ivy Mining Bees (Colletes hederae). Males seeking females. Females have not yet emerged from their underground brood cells. Males have longer antennae. Very difficult to photograph (focus) on the ground habitat because males constantly moving / flying and obscured by grasses. Easier to photograph at the shallow cliff face where males explore cracks / crevices / holes seeking females – and occasionally remain still during their aggressive encounters.

Lens / camera combination: 1960s Novoflex 'squeeze trigger follow focus' f3.8 '3 element telescope lens' (as distinct from telephoto), with Leica R adapter; 2 x Leica R extension tubes, Leica R 1.4x APO extender; Novoflex R to L 'dumb' adapter; Leica CL camera.

Resultant FF equivalent 420mm f8 – stopped down to FF equivalent f16.  Hazy Sun late afternoon required ISO 3200 to avoid image blur.

Visited Swaddywell Nature Reserve near Peterborough UK Saturday 14 Sept. to photograph Ivy Mining Bees and surprisingly heard what sounded like a bumble bee – but looked like a hornet. It's the UK's largest hoverfly, Volucella zonaria; a hornet mimic. This female specimen is approx. 25mm long with 40mm wingspan. It's a European species which is expanding its range in the UK; this is the first specimen I've managed to photograph. Very active – darting amongst flower heads feeding on nectar. Volucella zonaria breeds in common wasps' nests which it enters unhindered to deposit ova. Larvae feed on wasp nest detritus. Pupae over-winter and develop underground.
