PS MAC Thing?

I've been using PS for the last five years on a PC and recently upgraded to CS3 and an IMAC. I've run into a problem I've never experienced before. When I go to scaled print size, if I accidently put a number that's too high there, PS locks, and if I haven't saved my work it's gone. Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Cheers,

Wilfredo

Wilfredo, sounds like you need a mac guy to visit your premises, a couple hours tutorial could be worth it....................... hands on stuff beats guessing games on a forum

Although being a longtime Mac user having a deeply rooted trust in the safe and secure running of the machine I always intermediately save the alterations I've done to the pic.

Never trust a computer.

BTW. it sound to me as if the document you exidentaly overenlarged has exeded the available amount of memory for the task.

My G5 has 6 Gb and will stil occasionaly let me know I"m asking to much.

Though, I never lost anything so far.

Mac, it just works;-)

.... and if I haven't saved my work it's gone.

And what's the lesson learnt here? ;)

Sorry to be so glib but I once managed a 47 station network and I was sick telling everyone to save, save and save again. Applications will crash, data will be lost, files will become corrupt, hard drives will fail. These are they only computing truths as certain as taxes and death.

Save your work each time you add something you would not like to lose, have a robust backup strategy annnnnd, if you have an important project file that you are working on over several days make a duplicate every morning, rename it for example FileName02.psd, FileName03.psd etc. That way if the file does become corrupt, or you want to revert to a previous version, you've got them. Do this on top of your backup strategy.

Glad to answer any other questions.

Michael

All this is very sound advice and I've started to save now especially before I go to print. I'm also being more careful about not over enlarging the document by accident which is what is creating the problem. I never had this problem on the PC, I guess it's all a matter of adjusting to the IMAC. Overall, I am very happy with the change, and can't see myself returning to the world of P.C.'s.

Wilfredo,

I'm no expert, but I'm finding it hard to believe that in the situation you describe, a file can get lost down a black hole. (On a PC yes, but on a Mac I'd say that's rare to say the least}

Possibly the file is still there somewhere on your drive - as has been suggested above why not have a friendly local Mac guru come check it over. (These guys must be thick on the ground in CA).

Good luck - keep at it with your iMac, before you know it you'll be regarded as a guru yourself, and will be helping new users get started.

Wilfredo--

As you see from the lack of positive response to your question, this isn't common. Both Apple and Adobe offer forums where you can get help, but let me mention:

Somewhere I read not to change "Scale" in the "Page Setup" dialog box (first pic below), but to scale only in the "Print with Preview" dialog box (second below).

You don't say which dialog is producing the problem, and I don't know why it was recommended that one scale only in the "Print with Preview" control panel; maybe it's a general thing, maybe it's related to my printer, I have no idea.

Maybe it's related to your problem?

My experiences are only with CS2, so maybe things are different in CS3. The problem may even be a CS3 bug; did you switch to CS3 at the same time as or later than switching to the iMac? Are you running the latest version of CS3? (Just questions; I don't need a response, having given you the full extent of my knowledge on the matter. :o )

Good luck.

Again--don't scale in "Page setup"; do scale in 'Scaled print size' under "Print."

Based on your description, the issue is application/memory centric i.e. print spooler, available memory and whether PS CS3 has an auto-save option. If the file exceeded the available memory on your Mac (windows or otherwise) the result would be the same. CS3 is a resource hog and you would be better served with a minimum RAM of 2gb and 4gb optimum (iMac model centric). In short, if you quit the application normally, or you force quit the application via key commands; alt/Cmd/esc and auto-save was selected, the file is protected. Otherwise, the file may be lost up until the point of the previous save function (Cmd/S).

Regards,
