ArtZ Posted September 14, 2007 Share #1 Posted September 14, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have a question. I have my old Leica 64Mb SD card (the ones which comes with the Digilux 2) with the M8 firmware on it. I have formatted the card on my computer, copied the firmware on it (no DCIM folder after formatting on my laptop) and put the "Lock switch" ON before inserting the card the M8 (This SD card has always been protected) I updated the firmware (the m8-1_102.upd) file has not been automatically deleted after update because the card was locked... but the M8 has managed to create a DCIM folder and a LEICA100 subfolder EVEN WITH THE WRITE PROTECTION SWITCH ON !? Any ideas? .

jaapv Posted September 14, 2007 Share #2 Posted September 14, 2007 Does it write photographs to the file as well? Did you get the "SD card is Locked"message when starting up?
ArtZ Posted September 14, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted September 14, 2007 Does it write photographs to the file as well? Did you get the "SD card is Locked"message when starting up? Jaap, I use this card only for firmware updates. When you turn on the camera, the firmware upgrade menu comes to the screen. No message of "SD card is Locked". I just flash the firmware and turn off the camera. And before to turn it on again, I put a 2Gb SD card. When the SD card has a firmware file, you cannot take pictures because the camera ask you to upgrade the firmware. Hummm... I can say "NO" and see what happens. Addition: (After Jaap message) I have unlocked the card, deleted the DCIM folder; locked the card again; inserted on the M8; turn on the camera; the firmware upgrade comes up; said "NO"; tried to take a picture; when I pressed the sutter I had the message "Attention SD-Card is locked"; removed the card from the camera; inserted on the compter AND A NEW DCIM FOLDER WAS THERE!!! Tried with another SD card and same results! M8 can write a DCIM folder even with the SD card locked... Very, very extrange... .
jaapv Posted September 14, 2007 Share #4 Posted September 14, 2007 Manuel, I ask because it may simply be that the card lock is faulty. Or that the card locked detection on the camera does not function. I don't know if it is a little switch on the card or a detection sensor, optical or otherwise in the card slot. The first solution seems more rational.
ArtZ Posted September 14, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted September 14, 2007 Manuel, I ask because it may simply be that the card lock is faulty. The first solution seems more rational. Jaap, It happens also with a second SD card. The detection switches are working on the camera and the cards because you cannot take pictures if you say "NO" to the firmware upgrade. You get the message the "Attention SD-card is Locked". Could you just try in your camera, please? Thanks .
jaapv Posted September 14, 2007 Share #6 Posted September 14, 2007 Sorry, I am at my work, and I have just one card with me - with photographs on it. I'm not about to format that in the computer . Maybe somebody out there. This is interesting - does the camera circumvent the SD lock to write a directory to the card regardless? Does the switch not lock the root? I think we need an memory card guru here. As an aside - I think it is wiser to format the card in the camera instead of in the computer generally - but then you would never have noticed this phenomen. ArtZ Posted September 14, 2007 Author Share #7 Posted September 14, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm not about to format that in the computer Formating in the computer is not necessary. It's the same when/if you delete the DCIM folder on your computer and you WRITE PROTECT the SD card before inserting it on the M8. I really cannot understand how the M8 can write on a tab protected SD card when a firmware file is on the card. Thank you, Jaap .
ArtZ Posted September 14, 2007 Author Share #8 Posted September 14, 2007 Nobody tried?
ho_co Posted September 15, 2007 Share #9 Posted September 15, 2007 Interesting. But the "write protect switch" doesn't physically block the card, does it? I would think it's just a signal to the firmware that the card isn't to be written to. But the firmware could be written not to pay any attention to the setting of the write protect tab; possibly the camera requires the DCIM folder for the update procedure, and examination of write protection is disabled. --HC
