Hi,

I'm seriously considering buying a Leica Q2 or even a Leica Q2 Monochrom. I have owned a Leica M6 and three Summicron lenses (35mm, 50mm and 90mm) since the early '90's of last century and the last couple of years I have always been yearning for a digital Leica. A digital M is out of the question, I have grown accustomed to the benefits of shooting digital (Nikon and Fujifilm) and my eyes are too old to go fully optical again.

The last weeks I have been watching tons of YouTube video's and reading online articles on the Q2 but there's still one question that remains unanswered. I know that on the LCD the exposure settings obscure the bottom of the picture, even in Full screen mode (at shutter half-press), which botters me slightly. But I didn't find any info on the EVF concerning this matter. Do the exposure settings in the EVF obscure the image in the same way like the LCD? And for that matter, how good is the EVF for us who wear glasses? Do we get to see the full picture in the EVF? I know that there's a diopter but I prefer not taking my glasses off when photographing.

A picture of the view through the EVF would be very helpful.

Thanks.

I don’t know whether the EVF data strips cut off part of the image, but you can simply remove those strips by pressing the center of the controller which will step through the options of what you see.

Thanks for your reply Le Chef. That would be one solution but I still would like to see some basic exposure settings though, like shutter speed, aperture, exposure compensation... both in the EVF and on the LCD.

I very much like the way Fujifilm implemented this on my X-T2. You can shrink the image in the EVF a little so the exposure settings fall over the black border surrounding the image, not on the image itself. And on the LCD the data is in a see through strip overlapping the image but you can still see the image underneath.

I still wonder how the view in the EVF of the Q2 is.

You can choose multiple settings of what you se in the EVF or screen. In both you see the same information at all times. Whatever settings you have choosen you will ALWAYS see the bottom bar with the settings at the time when you half press the shutter release button. This can not be avoided. But still this has no effect on your frame. That bar covers the bottom part. That is true. But still your image is NOT cut off there. And again: Same on screen or EVF.

On the LCD the bar is slightly transparent. On the EVF it is black and not transparent.

But I wonder: You are in a little small detail. You will see that all of this is of no relevance. It is important that you set the information that you want to see according to needs.

Thanks for your reply M11 for me. Yes I understand that the image is not cut off, I only find the black strip on the bottom of the image annoying while composing.

Do I get it right when I understand that the settings for the LCD and the EVF can't be set separately?

No, the LCD and EVF settings cannot be set independently.
And to confirm: the data strips cut off the image on the LCD (where they are slightly transparent - but not very IMO) but not in the EVF.
You can choose whether you see LV on the EVF only, LCD only (the EVF goes blank), Auto (it switches, depending on whether your face is at the eyepiece or not), or Extended, which is what I use (LV only on the EVF, but the LCD is used for menu settings if your eye is away from the eyepiece).

IMO it is little hassle using the centre button to toggle between cluttered and uncluttered views.

Thanks for your reply Paul.

Good to know that the image in the EVF isn't cut off. If and when I'll buy the Q2 (I probably will) I'll try the centre button solution you suggest.

Yes, not separately. And re it being annoying to see the black strip: Depending your settings you do NOT see that strip except while pressing the shutter release.

Thanks M11 for me. In the meantime I have ordered my Q2, Thumb Support and two extra batteries. Looking forward to delivery.

As an aside, I downloaded the instruction manual for the Q2 before it arrived so i had settings and functionality understood and ready to setup as profiles once I got the camera. It saved a lot of time faffing about for no gain.

Great idea, thank you.

Also when downloading a Leica user manual, it is for the original firmware release.  You should also download the release notes for the current firmware version to read about new features and changes to the interface.  The good news is, Leica rarely changes the actual user interface.

The cutting off of the screen for the info bars with the LCD is probably the most annoying thing about the Q2 (at least for me). Yes you can turn it off but then you have no info on the most important parameters!!!! and it comes back again with a half press of the shutter. EVF is excellent. a real design mistake by Leica

Go to your Friendly Local Dealer and handle the Q2.

Yes, I can imagine. On the other hand when this is the most annoying thing, then all in all the Q2 sounds good. I'll now tomorrow when mine is delivered.
