50mm noctilux f0.95 and clear filter

Hi everyone, 

I’ve just watched Thorsten’s video on noctilux and he said this is one lens where the instructions say not to use clear filters or UV filters on because it has hard glass on the front. Just wondering how many of you use a filter on this lens? Do you find it to deteriorate the picture quality?

No filter the built in sun shade is protection enough.

I use filters UV and ND and am very satisfied, though I have not actually made a with/without comparison. :))

This makes me wonder, which lenses have hard glass on the front and which don`t. Is there really such a difference between currently available Leica lenses ?

I used to be a "no filter" guy. I was under the impression that Leica front elements of modern glass were very durable and not prone to scratch. Then I scratched my 50mm APO-M cleaning it. Now I use UV filters on my lenses.

Not trying to be funny, but how did you scratch it cleaning it?  Was there a piece of grit on your cloth that you didn't notice?  Did you use a lens cleaning cloth? etc

@HussI think some grit got caught in the cleaning cloth. I usually use an air blower on the front element before cleaning so that's the only thing that I can come up with.

in a Peter Karbe interview this has been talked about.

this lens has some specific characters and putting on a filter interferers with it.

you will notice more CA, flare. always use the lens shade, it makes a big difference.

I still have some filter when I use it for photo and video, but I often take it off.

Replacing the front glass on a Noctilux 0.95 is $800.

 

cleaning pits. I use lens cleaning wipes from ZEISS. they come in single packs and are single use. they work well.

Does the newer f1.2 noctilux have the same properties that should be used without a filter?

Im a capless hoodless guy who use filters on every lens i posses, that includes all the modern lens, dont care how hard the front element they claim, even a sapphire might be scratched …

in the end im the one who pays the repair
