Was browsing B&H Photos (NYC) website yesterday, and was surprised by the amount of out-of-stock, or back order, more on the way, was shown. Granted a lot of, unknown to me, films were advertised. Kodak and Fuji were in the no show. Ilford is busy manufacturing and selling their films. Agfa is selling their products. Does anyone know if they have their color negative film with the same formulation as in the 90's.

Be aware that AgfaPHOTO is not the same company as Agfa-Gevaert of the past. Agfa-Gevaert spun off their consumer film division 15 or more years ago, and now only sells "industrial" photo film (for X-rays and Aerial photography). The spun-off AgfaPHOTO went bankrupt and closed, but someone bought the name and now sells repackaged film (B&W-only) from - someone else - (guesses are FOMA, OrWo, Adox, or Ilford's Kentmere budget brand) as APX 100/400. Seems to be an OK film in its own right, but not the same as the old stuff,  and not color at all.

............

As to supply overall, there are still some Covid workforce shortages, and shipping bottlenecks, especially from overseas (and that includes stuff manufacturers have to buy to make the films). Plus, retailers are averse to overstocking film with an expiration date when the economy is unpredictable, thus they can get caught short if demand is higher than expected.

Personally I buy locally (three stores or chains still sell film in Denver), and have not had much trouble getting most of the usual suspects right off the shelf.

If one must buy mail-order, here are a couple of other US film stockhouses that may or may not have a particular brand/emulsion in stock, if the big NYC stores are sold out:

I'm not sure what you're looking for, but many of the popular B&W film stocks are available at B&H, including Kodak Tri-X, Ilford HP5+ and FP4.  Portra 400 is in stock in 120 but appears to be out of stock in 35mm at a few of the big retailers I checked.  But it hardly seems like a massive film shortage.

I’ve had no problem buying Ilford and Kodak black and white films, but Kodak color film has been out of stock everywhere I’ve looked for a while. I just ordered ten rolls of Portra 400 yesterday—the maximum allowable order—from Cinestill, who suddenly had it in stock. My perception is that 35mm color film in general can be hard to track down right now.

Just started shooting film again, so decide on a range of the usual suspects … HP5+, Delta 400, Tri-x 400 and Acros 100. Guess which one the supplier couldn’t get hold of? Yep Fujifilm Acros. Seems to be a global shortage.

Film does appear to be in short supply. As stated above I believe there’s a number of reasons from shortage of raw materials, to COVID shutdowns to expiration dates.

I just took a quick look at Freestyle Photo in Los Angeles area. They inventory 72 separate 35mm color negative films but only have 13 in stock; none of the popular brands primarily QWD and Psychedelic Blues. Don’t appears to have the supply issue in B+W film. However, they do have broad availability of 120mm color negative film.

Maybe not a worldwide shortage, Acros is expensive in the U.K. but very much available. If there are shortages I think it's the perfect storm, the lag caused by Covid and the increasing popularity of film, especially among younger photographers.

Fujifilm may be slightly different because I don't think they have yet downscaled their film production line (if they ever do), which means when they switch it on they need to make a significant amount of film to justify the cost, and given each film gets an expiry date it needs to be sold quickly so the demand caused by backorders is ideal for them.

Kodak Portra and Ferrania P30, both in 135 format, are the only ones I’m after that have been quite scarce since the onset of the pandemic.

My local lab got a secret stash of Portra 400 in 135 last fall, but otherwise hard to come by.

Ilford is abundant in 135, MF, and LF. And Portra in 400/800 has been readily available in MF & LF (lucky me!). Which suggests to me it’s mostly the film boi hype that’s making Portra in 135 so elusive.

Don't go to the big name websites.  That's where everyone goes.

Just google what you are looking for, select the shopping tab, then see who has it in stock.  I also use that to find the cheapest prices.

You might be right, but AG Photographic and WEX are struggling to obtain supplies

I know, I was only (half) joking.  I figured the shipping cost would be prohibitive.

Not if you acquire 100 rolls. Can even mix and match!! Cost per roll would be extremely cheap. Just hope expiration isn't 30 days out.

True, but may as well wait for supply to increase in the UK not in a rush have plenty of other film stock.
Personally, I was just curious about the film and it’s qualities.
