It is not uncommon to find these in the middle of a field here on the Prairies of Manitoba & Saskachewan. The original farmers, when preparing the land, moved them into piles to free-up as much tillable soil as they could, but still not have to move the rocks too far. I'd have thought they would build a barn or wall or something not just leave them in a pile. I agree in the future these little altars will indeed appear to have some religious meaning.
