For my second article on the upcoming Leitz Auction, I have chosen some unusual items for the fact that they are interesting, rather than the fact that all of them are quite valuable.

That Nikon 6mm/2.8 fisheye!

I don't know what to say. I wouldn't want to own it for any amount, but I love the fact that it exists.

Certainly a rare, impractical and spectacular lens, hence the 'Crocodile Dundee' analogy.

Also spectacular is the 60cm Leitz Mirror Lens, seen here in the entry for 15th August 1949 in Wilhelm Albert's diary. Only one copy of this lens was ever made, so it is much more rare than the Nikkor Fisheye. The lens looks very 'modern' for 1949.

There is an even more spectacular one off Leitz lens in the Albert Diary and I will post a picture of that when my review of the diary* goes out in the UK Leica Society Magazine. That lens will not be coming for auction as it was destroyed in WWII, possibly by the RAF.

Right. There are some baffling and amazing prototypes out there. That mirror lens is amazing!

What impress me about the Nikkor is that it actually made it into production and 200 were made. Someone (200) actually thought a 6mm fisheye lens was useful for something, and paid what must have been a fortune at the time to own it.

Being a Japanese lens, I doubt anyone, at the time, where thinking in terms of collector value.
