So I decided to do it all again since my first attempt at applying primer was sloppy. I didn't give it a good enough coating and the black paint wasn't adhering well to the sharp edges of the text.

My second attempt I made sure that I had three good coats of primer and paint. No flaking when handling the dot with toothpicks and tweezers.

A closer look below...

Hi hmzimelka,

Looks good!

May I ask how you take off the red dot without demagoguery it or scratching the camera?

cheers

Tim

Hi, Tim.

Thanks. It's quite easy using two tooth picks.  You push the toothpicks on opposite ends the raised letters to twist off the dot. After that you can lift it off easily. It's just thin double sided tape holding the dot on the camera. Easy to replace again with decent 3M double sided tape and some careful cutting; It needs to be smaller than the dot but big enough to have sufficient contact point on the camera to stick. As you can see there isn't much surface area on the camera for the dot to stick to.

Cheers,

Martin

Thanks Martin!

That seems to be very simple. I‘ll shop around for a spare dot and then try it myself.

Cheers

Tim

Good luck! It's not difficult at all, except the part of practicing patience while removing the red paint and applying a good coat of a primer.

It's good to know that I'm not the only one that is still thinking about this. I prefer the black Leica dot and picked up a few from DAG years ago. I have no illusions about safety, etc. I just prefer it aesthetically. However, I do find that having used Leica's for several years now my aversion to the red dot is subsiding. I just picked up a used silver M11 and I'm not sure if I will use my last black dot on it.

There are fake Rolexes everywhere too; doesn’t mean the company is responsible or not protective.  The only Leica product sold by the company with black logo/Leica script has been the black M8.2.  Forum reports by those who know far more than I on the subject, indicate that Leica Microsystems was not pleased with the M8.2 situation.

Jeff

Not true - the Leica CL Bauhaus edition also had a black dot…

I was referring to regular production models, not special editions.

Not sure it really means anything different- it’s still a product that Leica is selling with a black dot on it. Any issues with the M8.2 using it would also be an issue now, and yet they seem to have been able to ☺️

Unless you have an inside scoop that we don’t know about? Would be curious to hear if so!

Black dot on black M8.2 only; not silver model, which has red dot. The story, including logo ownership rights, has been recounted here ad nauseam. Special editions often include features outside Leica norms; not part of MY discussion.

Best way to hide the leica is not using it.. but not very practical. I use a small piece of blank tape and a grocery shoppingbag if needed. However, insurance is also a good thing.

I like to hide the red dot. Because otherwise, once in a while, strangers slobber over the camera, and it's embarrassing. Like, I'm not worthy.

And I don't want them to touch the camera. They might change the  settings, or smear the lens or the view screen. Or run off with it. Or drop it.

I had been using black tape, but now I'm buying these dots to see how they are.

I don't understand, if you don't like others to touch your camera, why can't you just refuse so?

Or buy a black paint or -P or report or monochrom version, like I do. :D

I use these, looks nicer than a sticker. My q3 has one on, I’m about do the same on my m11, I’m also going to get them engraved too ;)

I also like how you've camouflaged your keyboard so that no one knows you have a computer! Very stealthy!
