Leica do have a sense of humour!

At least, that's the only reason I can think of why they've introduced this plastic ring to fit inside the WATE filter holder.

Let's see, you buy the filter holder to step up to 67mm and a huge and expensive 67mm UV/IR filter to put on it and then use the plastic ring to mask off the perimeter of the filter which is not needed when used with an M8. Still no hood, still no lens cap. Let's guess the diameter of the central hole, err, I'm thinking it will be 49mm to match the filter glass used in John Milich's adapter.

And, just in case your brain is running slow, they thoughtfully let you see some of the "Only use on a Leica M8" warning through the peep-holes in the filter holder.

Why Leica don't accept that for a lens which costs as much as this does, they should have an elegant, fit for purpose filter/hood/cap solution is beyond me. But I suppose, armed with a development budget of €100, this is all they could come up with.

Thanks to Teddy for sending me the pictures - I didn't get this valuable Leica accessory with my 67mm filter or the filter holder. Perhaps they were afraid I'd rubbish it on the Leica forum... Me?

Um, well, uh oh. Perhaps I should have read this thread before buying the Leica WATE filter adaptor and a 67mm B&W UV/IR filter. These are both being sent to me. I never thought to ask: can I use the lens hood that came with the WATE? And if I need a new lens hood or lens cap, does someone have a recommendation? Many thanks. JB

John if you can send the 67 back and the holder and take that money and get's John's rig , works great and a much better M8 solution and you can use the orginal hood to boot. Start looking for a leica 49 IR filter , hard to find

Yes, it's the ring which now comes with the filter adapter to prevent the two holes appearing in the image, like a pair of ghostly UFOs. I bought two of the filter adapters (don't ask) and this brainwave has obviously happened since then as the rings were not included.

Even with the ring, there's still no lens hood and no lens cap when the filter adapter is used. It's an ill-thought out shambles but at least it's not alone. Noctilux hood, anyone?

It's an ill-thought out shambles .............

True - and I am saving for the alternative - but at least it was a freebee (frisbee?), together with a free filter and a free kludsy filterholder.

And it works, with a 7,-- EUR Canon lens cap. On the photo results nothing of this cr.. shows up, I can assure you.

Wasn't there someting about a given horse and a mouth? :)

No offense against anyone or anything intended!

With the Leica filter adaptor use a Leica 67mm lens cap.

With the Leica adaptor you can stack a polariser on top of the uv/ir however the Milich solution is far more elegant and costs together with the Leica 49mm UV/IR about the same as the Leica adaptor with the Leica 67mm UV/IR.

My Leica adaptor came without the disc thing, I got one FOC by phoning Leica UK marketing department.
