This man, likely long gone now, was a chief of the Lac Courte Oreilles tribe in northern Wisconsin. It's a scan of a Kodachrome image, then converted and toned. The reason for the silver toning is that I wanted to give it a kind of Edward Curtis look.

The watch doesn't suit him.

Doesn't take away from the fact it's a nice portrait, at least you resisted the temptation to clone the watch & cigarette out.

Would I have done ... hmmmmm!

I've never seen a chief with a hand watch.

How many chiefs have you seen? My uncle lived in Utah and was very good friends with a Ute chief named Thundercloud. I met him a few times when I was between five and ten years old. Chief Thundercloud wore a suit and tie and I'm pretty sure there was a watch under his sleeve. The man in this photo wasn't trying to pretend to be dressed in 1800s garb. This was his formal dress for the current period. There's no reason why he shouldn't have a watch on his wrist. I could have easily cloned it out, but why? If he chooses to wear a watch who are we to say it doesn't look "right?"

I haven't seen that many chiefs. I just wanted to point that out because i think it draws the eye to it in the photo. By the way, it's a very nice photo. Well done!

You beat me on this one, out of place and  it's  such a nice portrait too  bad Brent you should have had him remove it. .

This wasn't in a studio. It was an outdoor setting where he was an honored guest. He was not there for the purpose of being photographed by me. It would have been extremely rude and out of place for me to tell him to take off his watch so it would improve my photo. That kind of behavior gives photographers a bad reputation.

Not really, I'm sure  with you warm personal and convincing  personality would have won him over,   This was a historic moment to  be preserved for future generations and you the photographer were there!

All you really needed to  do  was extend his left sleeve to  cover his watch  and it wouldn't have been noticed.😋

It's easy to make judgements from where you are, considering you have no idea what the circumstances were. First, what you suggest would not have been possible logistically for several reasons. Second, even if it had been possible, I wouldn't have done it. The watch doesn't bother me. You seem to be stuck in the mindset from the John Wayne westerns about what is and isn't proper attire for Native Americans. Perhaps you need to reassess and examine your bias.

Cheers.

Nice comment  I would never expect you to be rude or disrespectful ,  you are not one to  show audacity  to  your elders, keep  that in mind when addressing me 😁

Respect is earned. Not acquired by age.
