A remarkable day in the Puyango Petrified Forest in the South of Ecuador in 2010.

At that time there were thought to be only seventy of these magnificent birds remaining in the whole country.  That day I watched seven of them (10 percent) hovering in the sky overhead. They are enormous, the largest birds of prey in the world, with wingspans of about ten feet. They soar beautifully in the air currents.  I was unprepared, with the wrong lens for this surprise sighting, and could never manage a shot with more than two at a time as “proof” of my good fortune. Presently their numbers have increased to about seven thousand.
