tashley Posted April 15, 2022 Share #1 Posted April 15, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) My M11 has just been returned after several weeks away being fixed in Solms. Don’t get me started about how a camera this expensive and this new could possibly need that so very soon after purchase. I cannot now find any way of making to connect via USBc cable to my iPad. I’m using a cable that I know worked before it went away and came back with the latest firmware installed without my consent. I have tried MiFi and PTP, in Fotos, Photos and Lightroom and I cannot for the life of me make it work other than over Wi-Fi only at the usual treacle pace that would only be useful to people who shot three frames a week. Please, before I finally lose my sanity with Leica forever, someone tell me how to do it!!! Thank you…

Gobert Posted April 15, 2022 Share #4 Posted April 15, 2022 Of course it comes back with latest firmware. Why do you want to consent?

Thank you… Not sure why Leica thinks the best way to connect by Cale is thru an an iPhone given that you can't really get any actual work done on an iPhone. Rant Over 😀 I finally gave up and bought the Sandisk usb-c to SD card adapter. Its lightning fast with the L-DNG files. At this point the only value Fotos has for me is firmware updates via iphone

Because they don’t have a great recent track record with making people comfortable with FW updates. And because I didn’t send it in for a FW issue - it had other issues including a misaligned sensor. And because I like to choose when to update to new FW - often after a period of seeing how it has gone for other people. Especially when dealing with the Keystone Cops of camera makers. tashley Posted April 15, 2022 Author Share #7 Posted April 15, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) Here’s an excerpt from Leica’s current website and I would say that it unambiguously says that the M11 connects to an iPad with a USBc cable to allow fast photo download so, unless between us here we can work out how to make that work, I would suggest that Leica should take that claim down. Some purchasers might also want to claim a refund. ”The Leica M11 is a certified Made for iPhone® and iPad® product. As such the Leica M11 offers a seamless direct cable connection to iPhones and iPads. Simply connect your M11 to your iPhone using the included Leica FOTOS cable for fast photo download and control of your camera with the Leica FOTOS app. For iPads with a USB-C connector, you can use the original USB-C cable of your device. The app also provides over-the-air software updates, that will support easy updating to the new firmware, this will be available in the second half of 2022, and will activate the advanced Bluetooth® features of the M11.”
Photoworks Posted April 16, 2022 Share #8 Posted April 16, 2022 Most of the cables don’t work on the iPad. you need the USBC 2.0 cable i use this one.. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08PVPTNZL?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_dp_W2CCZN9FQFX8MCG56AQE after updating the camera I needed to delete the Fotos app and start a new connection
harmen Posted April 16, 2022 Share #9 Posted April 16, 2022 Just to confirm that it can work: I just plugged the camera (1.3.0.0) into an iPad 11 pro with Leica Fotos (3.1.1), using an Apple usb c to c cable I found in my desk drawer. No issues. 1
tashley Posted April 16, 2022 Author Share #10 Posted April 16, 2022 (edited) Thanks guys Mine worked before it went of for repair. I found two cables with which it worked and kept them to one side. Now, they don’t work but another cable that I purchased at that time, which did not work, does. It took me a long g time to discover this because having failed to work before, I’d pressed that cable into another use and didn’t think to try it because I ‘knew’ it didn’t work from the previous experience. There has been one other change though: I have purchased a new M1 powered iPad Pro and do t have the previous iPad Pro with me to test in an exact like for like basis. So there are three changes: new camera FW, new Fotos update and new iPad. Edited April 16, 2022 by tashley

fsprow Posted April 16, 2022 Share #14 Posted April 16, 2022 With my new iPad Air, with a USB C port, I tried to download from my camera using FOTOS and the PTP protocol. No go. I pulled out a Thunderbolt cable that I had, and it works perfectly. So cable characteristics seem to be the issue.
Kwesi Posted April 16, 2022 Share #15 Posted April 16, 2022 What brand thunderbolt cable, how many images, how fast, and lastly how often have you been successful?
fsprow Posted April 16, 2022 Share #16 Posted April 16, 2022 It is a Thunderbolt cable I bought at an Apple Store about a year ago. Only Apple marking. Have downloaded about 300 DNG/JPEG images.Have not made any quantitative measures but in the couple of minutes range overall.
Kwesi Posted April 16, 2022 Share #17 Posted April 16, 2022 Thanks. And sorry to sound skeptical. It’s been very hit or miss for me. I will give it a try next time I’m in the mall.
tashley Posted April 16, 2022 Author Share #18 Posted April 16, 2022 (edited) Right, I have done a series of tests to see what works for me: iPad Pro 11" Gen 3/MFi/Charging cable - Works but is slow. Direct into Fotos. iPad Pro 11" Gen 3/MFi/USBc 3.2 or 3.1 TB celbe - no connection, no way iPad Pro 11" Gen 3 with PTP selected on the camera doesn't;t work with any cable. iPad Pro 11" Gen 3 with card reader - really really fast into LR direct iMacPro works with card reader or with USBc 3.1 or 3.2 cable and only PTP selected in camera. It shows up as a drive but without previews and import is very quick direct into LR. iMacPro with USBc charging cable works with PTP direct into LR but it's slower than with a 3.1 or 3.2 cable iMacPro doesn't work with any cable if MFi is selected in camera So I cannot replicate FSPROW's comments above that he could make an iPad work with PTP and TB cable. Unless he has a typo and it's and iMac Air? Or unless he really is using an iPad Air and there's a difference between iPad Air and iPad Pro? But in any event PTP 'shouldn't' work with an iPad AFAIK. But now that I have a Leica M10R without any ports (the way it should be), I just put the SD card in a card reader and plug that into the iPad. M10R. Less gimmicks. Less issues. As it turns out you're right but I still think the promise is an interesting one: just carry the camera and the iPad USBc charger and cable that I always travel with and no need to pack a card reader or a camera battery charger. This is so close to working well and to being a genuine improvement on the need to carry too many bits and pieces, it's just that it seems flaky in practice.
