Hello Guys- I used to be a regular poster for years with my digilux 1, I see many names that I remember. I even purchased an M6 and a bag of lenses, which I sold and bought a nikon d50. The d50 is a nice camera, but like many a forum member told me- the best camera you have is the one in your pocket. And that d50 is almost never with me.

That said, I am getting another compact leica. This camera will be put in a case and taken around all the time, part of that time will be while bike riding, is the D-Lux 3 too big to be put in a lowepro case and carried mtn biking? Should I stick to the c-lux? Quality of picture is important to me, I have been carrying this junky pentax with me, and I realized the majority of my picture taking is with that camera, and they are coming out poorly, so I will take the extra size if it means a better picture.

Hello again,

-Joe

Hi Joe. The D-Lux3 isn't big at all, just thicker than the C-Lux2 due to the lens which does not retract entirely into the body.

I own both cameras, and although the C-Lux is wonderfully small, I greatly prefer the D-Lux3. You have absolutely no control over the picture parameters on the C-lux --- no aperture priority mode, no control over shutter speed, etc. Also, the D-Lux3 has RAW capture, and I'm pretty sure the sensor is larger than the C-Lux (although still quite small). And as a bonus, the 16:9 mode on the D-Lux can be rather interesting.

The only gripe I have with the D-Lux3 is the lack of an optical viewfinder. I really don't enjoy holding a camera at arms length. But it's pretty hard these days to find any compact digicam that has a viewfinder.

Jeff.

Joe, I have the D-Lux 3 and bought the new Ricoh GX100 about ten days ago, which I consider a better camera. Among its features is a "stepped" zoom lens that you can step from 24 to 28, 35, 50 and 72mm EFOV. It also has a neat detachable electronic viewfinder that you can swivel up 90 degrees whose quality is much better than the EVF on the Lieca V-Lux 1 and on the Digilux 3. There are excellent review of both the D-Lux 3 and the GX100 on Sean Reid's pay site < http://www.reidreviews.com/reidreviews/>, which is well worth the nominal subscription fee, considering how much you're going to spend on either of these cameras.

From your posting you seem determined to get a Leica, but you should realise that the D-Lux 3 is really a Panasonic. As I said, I thnk that the GX100 is a substantially better camera, although the D-Lux 3 is a good camera.

Heretic! Blasphemer! Assemble the torch-weilding mob, ye shall be burnt at the stake! :D

I bought D-Lux 3s for my wife, my daughter, and another close relative. They all are delighted. Myself, not so much. Shooting huge (10mb) RAW files and purchasing the $80 "pro" version of Noise Ninja (which permits use as a CS plug-in) allows me to shoot up to ISO 400. If you're buying it for outdoor use, ISO won't be a problem, however seeing the LCD might be. As to the Panasonic LX-2 twin brother, it comes with a 1-year parts/90-day labour warranty whilst the D-Lux 3 has a full 2-year. Rather like an HMO vs PPO :D

Well I am not a zealot... but I was very impressed with my Digilux 1 (the panasonic made one, not the fuji made digilux 1) and I enjoyed using it. It's just too big to carry around bike riding or running.

I am drawn to the c-lux or d-lux because of the wide for a compact digicam lens. I think wide angle is a really nice thing. I also like that crazy two lens kodak camera...

Sorry Joel, but, unless I'm reading you wrong, you come across as someone whose mind is made up: in that case why do you post the question: so that other people will conifirm your choice?

You say that you like wide angle lenses, but the D-Lux 3 only has 28mm at the 16:9 format: in the other formats (4:3 and 3:2) iit's close to 35mm. In contrast the GX100 starts at 24mm.

Some people just need others to confirm their already taken decisions...

I have the C-Lux and the results are very poor compared to those from the D-Lux (which virtues has been pointed by Mitch) and even when I have not tried one yet, I am very interested in the Ricoh, I am sure it is a better performer... -unfortunately it does not feature the red dot-.

Yesterday I took some pics with my L1 and its new 25mm Summilux 1.4 @ iso 1600 inside a museum featuring Egypcian pieces from the ISIS collection; I ended up with a pretty nasty neck pain at the end of the day but now I see the pics and it was worthy the 2 aspirins :-)

I agree, the best camera is the one we have at the right moment, but it is even better if the that camera has a real viewfinder, fast lens, a bigger sensor etc etc...

Wait a sec, I am confused, I am pretty sure I asked a question.

I think I asked for help deciding between the c-lux and the d-lux.

If you are very unhappy with your leica compact camera purchase, please consider selling them to me.

Thanks,

-Joe

I know this is OT, but I found by lengthening the neck strap, so that the straps actually rest on the corner of my shoulders, I can carry the D3 all day with no neck pain.

Could you open a new thread and post some examples of the 25mm Summilux Egyptian shots, I have some that I took at the British museum earlier this year using the 14-50 lens, for me in the low light OIS allowed me to capture those shots.

Joe,

If you nead one pocket camera you should go for the C-lux2.

I have one and the picture quality is good consider the size of the sensor and camera.

I bought one when I not just whant to use my R8 because ther size and wheigth or when one small camera is better for you take pictures whit more lowprofile whitout many eyes to look at you and your Leica.

Maybe the D-lux3 can take better pictures ,but the noise of the C-lux2 is low when compares to the D-lux3.

The chooese is yours.

Best,

Hi Joe, I think you are confusing the D-lux-3 and the Digilux 3. The D-lux is a small pocketable camera a little larger than the C-Lux. I have the Panasonic equivalant the LX2, and it's a good camera provided that you can get used to it not having an optical viewfinder. The 16:9 is useful as an alternative to the standard screeen ratios.

Results are good as long as you don't go to too high an ISO, and even then the results can look good converted to b&w.

Although the C-Lux is smaller, I chose the LX2 over it because the LX-2 supports RAW, something the C-Lux doesn't do.
