The market is a microcosm of Java Island, where I live. Many mothers and grandmothers carry their children or grandchildren on their backs while shopping. From their safe place, the children observe and learn. This child, with her eyes wide open, seemed curious of this non-Javanese stranger taking her picture. Henry Taylor Posted March 16, 2022 Share #4 Posted March 16, 2022 I like this shot but I think I would have cropped it closer to include the girl and mother
Herr Barnack Posted March 16, 2022 Share #5 Posted March 16, 2022 JMHO, but I like the framing as it is. The figure in the background on the left adds an element that magnifies the haunting undercurrent of the image. 2
fotografr Posted March 16, 2022 Share #6 Posted March 16, 2022 (edited) The eyes are isolated and emphasized by the shallow dof and the back of the mother's head. It's a very effective composition and a beautiful image overall. As to the cropping suggestion, I believe this photographer knows exactly what he's doing and why he's doing it. A possible explanation is that having the primary subject positioned where they are moving out of the frame and facing in that direction creates a tension that would not be obtained by balancing them in the center. Whatever his reason for this framing, it's his image and his decision. Edited March 16, 2022 by fotografr

It’s great that other photographers give their opinion and make suggestions (on this image in this case and on others posted by members). Henry I am attaching a vertical photo of the mother and daughter. I think this one has value also. This is the first photo that I did but I rapidly turned the camera horizontal and clicked before they were out of the frame and because I wanted to show more of the environment. I do think the horizontal image gives more of a story. The title of the reportage is Market of Humanity. Showing the life in the market. And Brent, I do agree that the placement of the subject creates a tension. Of course I was not aware of this when I took the image. Thanks. I do like to place my subjects off centre. I must say that this moment happened very rapidly. I tend to follow my instincts and hope for the best. And that the focus is tack sharp. Regards. And thanks Carl. Welcome, dear visitor! Jerry Attrik Posted March 17, 2022 Share #9 Posted March 17, 2022 The original is a superb off-chance casual and only feature is 'the eyes'. Leaves one wondering what the devil is going on there?

benqui Posted March 18, 2022 Share #11 Posted March 18, 2022 What a wonderful photo Carl! To me, number one is perfect. You see a bit of the background and her eyes are the most thrilling part of your composition. Very well done!

Great photography I must say. Some angles are awesome. To see your work and your studio reminds me ( in a smaller scale) of the times I was an advertising photographer in Montreal. I closed up shop just a few years after the advent of digital.
