jdphc8 Posted February 27, 2022 Share #1  Posted February 27, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I have a 50MM APO summicron black chrome lens. I noticed when I put a filter on it, the metal cap does not fit well. Any suggestions on a cap that will fit with a filter on it?  Also, does anyone have recommendations for a good lens hood for it? I lost the one that came with it and need a replacement. Thank you!
Advertisement Posted February 27, 2022 Posted February 27, 2022 Hi jdphc8, Take a look here 50MM APO Summicron (black chrome) Cap or Hood when using filter. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
RexGig0 Posted February 27, 2022 Share #2  Posted February 27, 2022 Assuming that one is using E43 filters, any cap made for lenses with 43mm filter threads should work. Zeiss-branded 43mm caps are readily available, if one does not mind using a competitor’s product. 😉 https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1093033-REG/zeiss_1855_515_43mm_front_cap_for.html I use Zeiss lenses, for both SLR and M cameras, so, do not feel a need to be a purist about lens caps. The replacement hood is available from Leica dealers. It is not inexpensive. Filters will probably interfere with fitment of the hood, as documented in other discussions, in this forum, so, keep that in mind if buying the actual Leica hood. https://leicastoremiami.com/collections/m-system-lens-accessories/products/leica-lens-hood-for-50mm-f-1-4-summilux-black-chrome-11688?variant=26725105424 Heliopan makes Short Metal Lens Hoods, that fit filter threads. If one could find one that fits 43mm filter threads, that would be a less expensive alternative, that the vented Leica product. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=Heliopan short metal lens hood&N=0&InitialSearch=yes&sts=ma It may be necessary to search European sources, to see if a 43mm threaded hood is available.
RexGig0 Posted February 27, 2022 Share #3  Posted February 27, 2022 This product, a Heliopan Step-Up Ring, allow using 46mm filters and caps on lenses with E43 filter threads, and can be added to the front of an expensive 43mm filter to protect the filter’s threads from damage. It can, also, serve as an abbreviated hood, directly on the lens, to protect the threads. It will cause some minor increase viewfinder blockage. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/160306-REG/Heliopan_700243_43mm_46mm_Step_Up.html
Gobert Posted February 27, 2022 Share #4 Â Posted February 27, 2022 I the B&W pro (thin) versions and the metal cap fits smoothly. Not the plastic one.
skueh Posted March 6, 2022 Share #5 Â Posted March 6, 2022 The 50 Apo Summicron Asph black chrome lens takes E39 size filter. Normally the outer diameter of the filter is smaller that the outer diameter of the lens front end (or the inner diameter of the front lens cap), therefore the filter is undersized to fit with the lens cap. This happens to most of the 50mm Summicron lenses except those with build-in hood version. My solution is to line the inner rim of the lens cap with a thin layer of velvet cloth so as to increase the surface friction between the lens cap and filter. Hope this helps. jdphc8 Posted March 7, 2022 Author Share #6 Â Posted March 7, 2022 Wouldn't it just be easier to find a cap that fits the E39 size filter?

RexGig0 Posted March 8, 2022 Share #9  Posted March 8, 2022 I just realized that my previous posts, in this discussion, were in error. I seem to have mis-read the original post as being about the Black Chrome edition of the Summilux. It is too late to edit. I apologize. The Heliopan Short Metal Lens Hood, and the Heliopan Step-Up Rings, that I mentioned earlier, are also made to fit 39mm filter threads. As for the lens caps, Leica makes a general-fit 39mm lens cap. 14038 is the product number. When the Leica 14038 cap was unavailable, a few years ago, I found a suitable alternative to he a Fujifilm 39mm lens cap. Actually, the Fujifilm cap, with its squeeze tabs being located nearer the center, is easier to use, if a hood is in place. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1024613-REG/fujifilm_16389707_front_lens_cap_39mm.html
davidmknoble Posted March 10, 2022 Share #10  Posted March 10, 2022 I use the Leica plastic e39 cap when I have a filter on the lens.  It is easy to use and like my other lenses, and I don’t worry about losing a slip on cap.  I don’t use the hood that came with it (or the one for the black chrome 50 ‘lux either) because they are so large.  I haven’t tried this, but I have several old hoods for the 50 summicron rigid and I’ll bet they would work just as well.  I’ll try to post an iPhone shot if it works. I love those hoods because they are small and they fit other 50’s… Conversely, the black chrome 35 ‘cron lens hood is great (I think it is a Leica 12504?).  I have several older ones and I enjoy that hood a lot.
