When I use the function on SL2-S, the camera does not record the overlay image. Does anyone know how to troubleshoot? I remember playing with the function a while ago and it would give me an option to save the image or retake it, but now nothing happens after I press the shutter, it just saves a single image.

You need to choose the image. See page 18 of the release notes.

Thanks, beewee. I do select a previous image (the function is inactive if you don't), the overlay appears in live view, I press the shutter, but it saves the second image only, not the overlay. I wonder if there is a feature enabled that prevents it from recording it, even though I did a camera reset which unfortunately didn't do the trick. Tested with both Leica M and L lenses. I won't be surprised if it's an easy fix, but I just can't figure it out.

I think I understand what you’re trying to do, which is a double-exposure. The image overlay function is not meant for such things where you expose the same image multiple times which is supported in some non-Leica cameras. You’ll need to do that in photoshop or some other image editing software.

The purpose of the overlay is only as a framing tool so you can frame and reproduce a previously taken image but it does not merge or blend the two images for you in camera. For example if you want to frame the same image in a given location at different times of year and you want to be able to get the exact same view for each image, you can use the overlay function to help you frame and get the same perspective.

Hmm, I am pretty sure that, perhaps before the latest firmware, there was an option for the overlay to be saved as both a double exposure and a single image, or to be retaken without saving.

I don't think there is a double exposure function, the overlay is for composition only.
