AllNoAll Posted February 8, 2022 Share #1 Posted February 8, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) I hope this is allowed? Given the lens in question is a Voigtlander. I just purchased a new-in-box Voigltander 50mm F/1.5 VII Asph, and there is a visible piece of dust in side the lens. Is this normal?
Advertisement Posted February 8, 2022 Posted February 8, 2022 Hi AllNoAll, Take a look here New Lens Dust?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
david strachan Posted February 8, 2022 Share #2 Posted February 8, 2022 This can happen Allan. But you have grounds to send back for replacement. ...
giannis Posted February 9, 2022 Share #3 Posted February 9, 2022 Lenses are for looking through, not looking at. Try talking a picture. Does anything - even the slightest thing - show up? If yes, take the lens back for replacement. If not, use and enjoy it.
david strachan Posted February 9, 2022 Share #4 Posted February 9, 2022 I agree giannis. But buying a new lens can take away some of the enjoyment if it has faults. (If second hand I'd be suprised if there was no dust.) ...

I think this might have been a blessing! I ended up shipping it back to be returned, and instead bought the Voigtlander 50mm F/2 APO-Lanthar. Wow this lens is good!! Yes, I have found the 50 APO Lanthar to be among the very best lenses for image quality and build quality that I’ve ever owned (I’ve previously owned the M 50 APO, SL 50 APO). Voigtlander also has a 35mm sibling to it that I’m now keen to try. I agree with david strachan’s comment (ie, taking away some of the enjoyment it is has faults). In my personal situation, my SL 50 APO had a small patch of “something” visible under a light that shouldn’t be there on one of the internal elements. It meant to me the lens wasn’t pristine. In hindsight I should have returned it, because it did take away some enjoyment ….but I ultimately lived with it, and then sold it.

I agree in principle, but it's debatable what constitutes "fault" in terms of dust. If it were a scratch on the paint or something like that, I'd fully agree with you that since it's a new item it's unacceptable. But those lenses (all rf lenses in fact) are not weather sealed or air tight in the slightest. I'd consider minuscule amounts of dust - that is, up to a couple tiny specs - within tolerances/within spec. It could very well be that the lens left the factory without even that, but during packaging or shipment, or final QA to ensure focusing and function is smooth, a tiny dust particle got in. Plus it's a moot point, since even with light use and very soon after mounting it to the camera, you'll get tiny dust particles in. In the end though, if for whatever reason it bothers you and you can't put it past you, since the option for return exists, might as well return it rather than be annoyed by it. Huss Posted February 12, 2022 Share #8 Posted February 12, 2022 I once received a CV 50 3.5 from B&H that had a tiny bug in it! Yah, shipped that back too...
