Just catching up with this thread. The picture below shows on the left a IIIc/IIIf BD* with a 35mm Leitz Summaron lens and on the right a IIIf RD with a Canon 35mm f2.8 lens. The performance of both these lenses is equal, but, as a collector's item, the  Summaron fetches a much higher price.

* Note that the IIIc/IIIf has a sharkskin covering. It also has a self timer which was added at the time of the conversion. The Black Dial plate is a screw on item.

Speaking about interchangeable screw thread lenses , the earliest examples of these were made not by Leitz, but rather by the British companies Ross and Dallmeyer and the fellow German company Meyer. These were made for the I Model A from around 1928 , some years before interchangeable Leitz lenses were introduced with the I Model C. I will be giving a Zoom talk to the British Photographic Collectors Club (PCCGB) Research Group next Sunday about these cameras, conversions and lenses. A fellow PCCGB member, Paul Godfrey, will be talking about the use of the Leica 250 Reporter for seaside photography. Members here, who are also members of PCCGB, might like to dial into the meeting.
