fursan Posted September 8, 2007 Share #1 Posted September 8, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Received a new 'lux 35/1.4 asph today. opened the box with excitement but my anticipation quickly turned to the utmost disappointment. The lens hood was jammed into the lens. would not come off. the pressing of the 2 side flaps to remove the hood was useless. It was obvious no after checking was done. To make matters worse a small and very slight nudge to the hood to loosen it resulted in the whole contraption, hood, and lens coverings to fall apart. the aperture ring went into a rotational spin! Holy Detents Solms..lo and behold I had a unique leica summilux m asph 35/1.4 breaking apart!! fearful of subjecting myself to further Holy surprises, I have quickly packed my new possession for return journey to the vendor. My 'lux m 50/1.4 asph has focusing issues. the 35/1.4 fell apart. Do I dare risk a 'lux 75/1.4.. Twice bitten, forever ' forget it'. So much for quality control, brilliant lenses, company with a pedigree!! Holy Hyperboles Folks!!
Advertisement Posted September 8, 2007 Posted September 8, 2007 Hi fursan, Take a look here Leica Quality...Disappointing...Very disappointing. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
leicashot Posted September 8, 2007 Share #2 Posted September 8, 2007 To take off the 35/1.4 hood, you need to twist the ring first before removing it from the lens. You broke it I'm afraid.....instruction manuals can be important?!
fursan Posted September 8, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted September 8, 2007 Not if the ring cannot be twisted. Yep, especially when the manual says clicks'easily' into place. Hacker Posted September 8, 2007 Share #4 Posted September 8, 2007 You have to twist it out. First 2-3 times it is hard, but after that, very easy.
fursan Posted September 8, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted September 8, 2007 Stephen, it is very easy now!! Seriously though, thanks for your help. You have to twist it out. First 2-3 times it is hard, but after that, very easy.
Photoskeptic Posted September 8, 2007 Share #6 Posted September 8, 2007 Buy Summicrons. Seriously. It seems no one ever reports a problem with a 'cron. And most of the focus issues with the M8 have involved 'luxes.
Philippe D. Posted September 8, 2007 Share #7 Posted September 8, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi fursan, I guess you have to get a new hood if you broke this one. Look at the hood top. See a white point on the hood and a smaller one on the ring ? See also 2 red arrows, right of the point ? Well, you first turn the ring to get the red arrows facing the white point on hood. Then, slightly push on the sides flaps and pull off the hood. That's the way it works, and, in fact "clicks'easily' into place."

Jamie Roberts Posted September 8, 2007 Share #10 Posted September 8, 2007 {snipped}My 'lux m 50/1.4 asph has focusing issues. the 35/1.4 fell apart. Do I dare risk a 'lux 75/1.4.. Twice bitten, forever ' forget it'. So much for quality control, brilliant lenses, company with a pedigree!! Holy Hyperboles Folks!! So did you break the lens, or the lens hood? If it really was completely shattered, sounds like something happened in shipping. Hardly Leica's fault. I now have what I'd consider a lot of Leica lenses, both M and R, and including the 35 Lux. Every single one of them is brilliant, and brilliantly made. Just need a nocti to round out the list So I'm sorry for your bad fortune, but that's all it is. tom0511 Posted September 8, 2007 Share #11 Posted September 8, 2007 When I received my 24/2.8asph the hood was sitting on it very verys tight. I didnt accept it and we send the lens back for replacement. The new sample I received was much better. Whoever placed the hood on the first 24mm lens at Leica must have felt that it was sitting too tight. IMO Leica should work on their quality controll, also regarding front/back focus. blakley Posted September 8, 2007 Share #12 Posted September 8, 2007 I agree with Jamie that this is bad luck but not an indictment of the company in general. Having said this I must admit that the supplied plastic hood for the 35 Lux ASPH is the cheapest and (except for the utterly ridiculous Summitar barn-door hood) worst-designed Leica hood I own - and the equally cheap plastic hood for the 28 Summicron ASPH is a close second. I'd love to have a clip-on metal round hood for each of these lenses, and would even consider a screw-in round metal hood.
tom0511 Posted September 8, 2007 Share #13 Posted September 8, 2007 IMO its not bad luck if you read here how many lenses do front or backfocus. And its something which could be easily avoided. If we are able to detect front focusing Leica would be able to do the same.
dcoombs Posted September 8, 2007 Share #14 Posted September 8, 2007 A bit OT, but Stephen Lee, that's a really sweet picture! Nice effect with the side lighting. Looking at the slight blur of his left foot, was it taken at about a 30th of a second? Doug
fursan Posted September 8, 2007 Author Share #15 Posted September 8, 2007 folks, thanks a lot for words of comfort in addition for possible causes and cure. the vendor has suggested, i send it to solms, which i shall do tomorrow. along shall also go my m8 and 'lux 50. before i break either the M8 or the 50 hood due to 'user error'. I can console myself that the instruction manual was not in my native language! Thanks once again. But having handled nikons for quite sometime and subjected them to the harshest evvirons and handling, i say from my experience leica plastics and qc sucks. fursan Posted September 8, 2007 Author Share #20 Posted September 8, 2007 Jamie, i think i broke the hood. no shattered glass or asph falling out! no it was definitely not due to shipping or packing. either it was me or it was the qc. i know, for sure. So did you break the lens, or the lens hood? If it really was completely shattered, sounds like something happened in shipping. Hardly Leica's fault.
