I purchased used Elmarit-R lens and I got both the original lens hood and the E49 filter with the ring. The trick is that I cannot have both filter and hood attached at the same time because of that ring that adds to the height. I also cannot attach the filter without the ring, probably the threads are different, which seems strange since the diameters are the same and I can attach that same filter to my Summilux-M 28mm which has very similar design.

Is there a way to have both UV filter and lens hood attached to this lens?

Also, based on the serial number #2511###, this lens should be produced in 1972, but it's so well maintained, there's no single scratch, not to mention that there's no dust or haze inside the glass. I purchased it from the American photographer online, who said he used it for the long time, and was even featured in LFI gallery using this lens. He seems quite trustworthy, but I simply can't believe this lens is 50 years old. It looks the same as my Summilux M that I purchased new 6 months ago and paid 10x more for it. Any thought's on this?

if the serial # is correct, then its just been taken care of nicely, and maybe serviced..why is that hard to believe? :)

I don't know. I never bought used lens before and in my head, 50 years old, quite used lens must be pretty beaten up :) I didn't even expect this superb condition, and I thought even if that exists, it must be quite expensive.

I bought a lot of used Leica R lenses in 2017.  Most of them were made in the mid 1990s and they look brand new. Even today after years of careful use by myself.

Thing is, these things were so expensive when new 20+ years ago that their original owners tended to take care of them.  Also, let's be frank, a lot of Leica users are "weekend warriors" so tend not to bash their gear too much. This stuff was never really popular with photojournalists (yes I know there are a handful of famous exceptions), so owners - spending their own money - mostly needed to be careful.

A small advantage, I guess, being 2nd hand Leica (R) enthusiasts 😃

Completely different thing to when I was looking for a used Rollieflex TLR in the early 2000s.  Nearly all of them had been driven into the ground by 1960s-1970s photojournalists.  No matter how pretty the exteriors were, the inner workings were worn out.

@hirohhhh

I use this type of lens since decades.

Mine is old looking, the painting may be less durable, I have the Safari model with nice green hood.

The hood 12509 used to retain the Serie VII filter (no filter thread design).

Original hood 12509, very clever with a ring to turn from outside hood POL Serie VII filter.

Coming to your lens, as I see the adapter ring is 48mm to 49mm, one that I use also to adapt E49 filters easier to find than Serie VII filters.

For solution using hood with filter, I use Serie VII filters retained by the hood 12509.

With 48-49 adapter E49 filter could be used with screw-in E49 short hood or maybe SMC Pentax square hood for 28mm Takumar or SMC Takumar.

I think it was your post (or maybe not) I read somewhere on the forum in the meantime, where it was suggested to push the filter through the back of the hood, which I did and it worked. I can screw the hood now while the filter is on the lens. It's nice and tight.

Also, where can I find the cap for 12059 hood? Mine came without the cap, and on ebay there are plenty hoods without the cap. Is the cap a separate part with different number, or this hood never originally had a cap? Any other known model/brand that works with this hood?

Use the E48 filter 13330, which is the same diameter as a series VII filter, but threaded:

https://cameratique.com/13330-v-leica-e48-uva-camera-lens-filter-leitz-wetzlar-condition-silver-poofx

https://www.ebay.com/itm/203783045714?hash=item2f726a8252:g:tEUAAOSwKpph00wW

It will screw directly into the lens and still allow room for the hood to snap on. I own this lens.

The hood never had a cap. The cap is the same for the first 50mm Summilux-R.
