And yet, Leica makes quite a point of the versatility of the SL in all their marketing, especially with M glass, and MANY SL users love to use M lenses for their form factor, different rendering, and the shooting experience.

Leica marketing can say whatever they want. I’m not imposing my views on anyone, just expressing my personal findings and opinions.

n regards to not performing as well on an SL body, that is a highly overblown criticism. I own a 21 SEM and a 75 Noctilux

Certain lenses, particularly more modern releases like the 75 Noctilux does indeed perform well. I don’t doubt that but that’s more of an edge case when viewing at the 50+ years worth of M lenses.

if one can’t take a good photo with either of these lenses, it’s likely due to the competence (or lack thereof) of the snapper

Not sure if your jab was directed at me but you can see my photos on the SL2-S images forum and elsewhere. The images speak for themselves. Enjoy 🙂

I really don’t understand why you’re taking any of what I wrote personally - of course I’m wasn’t taking a “jab at you”, so you don’t need to post your (very good) photographs to justify your perspective on this. There are also many good photographs on this forum, and in the LFI gallery, made using all sorts of M glass on SL bodies.

You’ve made it clear that you personally don’t care for M glass on the SL; many of us including myself have a contrasting opinion. Both opinions can coexist without the commencement of hostilities.

Agreed. 🙂 Let’s move on.

Ditto apart from selling the Varios ...

I already had the 28mm and 50mm Summilux SL when I came across a used 24-90 Vario for a good price. The Vario is shockingly good though a little on the heavy side. Don’t sell it!

Thank you all for your contributions. Based on this AND some private conversations I had with some of you, I decided to keep the gfx as it is most probably a better option for long exposure (>4 minutes).

an adapter would not really make sense, so now I still need to figure out if I want color with my m-lenses. If yes, the question would be, which camera? The sl2(s), or just the sl or may be a m.

or maybe I don’t need color…

decisions, decisions.

Being someone that own both M and SL systems, I wouldn’t go out of my way to purchase an M lens to use on an SL body. In fact, I don’t even use my M lenses on the SL2-S because I get better performance and AF with native L-mount glass. There are better lenses for the SL for much cheaper (from Sigma) and has autofocus. The M lenses, at least the wide angle options with rare exceptions (35 APO M) don’t perform as well on the SL bodies, as compared to an M body.

I use the M 28 f/1.4 on the SL2-S without any issues. I would not go wider than 28, however. Reid Reviews discusses this in great detail.

I heard the OP say that he really likes to take portraits.  I agree that the 24-90 takes some great portraits in the 75-90 range.  So, then there is the idea of another lens.  If the OP has the 16-35, then there is a lot of coverage there.  Then, the real question is: for the 3rd lens, does it have to be autofocus and weather sealed?  If so, then yes any of the primes would do well.  If the answer is no, many of the M lenses produce great images.  I’ve used the 24 ‘lux, 75 ‘lux and 50 APO on the SL’s with great success.

If you are willing to manually focus, I would also say the R lenses are superb.  You can get a Leica R Elmarit 90mm f/2.8 which is about the same as the most current M elmarit 90, for a lot less (3-cam).  There are some other affordable Leica R lenses that do really well: the R Summicron 50 is strong as is the Elmarit 28mm 2.8 (either v1 or v2).  I really like the APO 90 and the ‘lux 80, but those are more expensive if you can even find a good copy.  So, just a thought.

Ok - Family and Portraits

and you own on of the best zooms for portrait

and the zoom for run and gun

I would go for a Macro Lens, as it gives you new opportunities and maybe new things to discover.

or a tilt and shift lens.

And as you own the best zooms yet, why not looking for something vintage?
some vintage M lenses for nice portraits.

Here some inspirations from zenography

have fun 🤩
