Leica SL2-S operated with Vario-Elmarit 24-90 / Dual-IS / images slightly burred

My dear leica friends,

I am shooting since over two years with my Leica SL 601 using various M-Lens and a Vario-Elmarit 24-90.

Last week my brand new Leica SL2-S arrived and with my M-Primes and my SL50Summicron everything works just so well. Hihg ISO is a joy.

But, operating my SL2-S at IS switched on with my SL24-90 (shutter speed 1/250s) the resulting files just not tack sharp like with my SL 601. The images are slightly blurred. Not much, but at 100% it shows clearly this slightly blur. Only if I switch off the IS (you can only selct IS off or on -  OIS can not separately be switch off in the SL24-90). It seams, that the two IS-Systems (IBIS and OIS) do not communicate perfectely.

Dose anyone have similar experience on a Leica SL2 or SL2-S?

Hope for advise.

Thanks in advance.
Josef

What focal length were you setting the 24-90? Was it handheld? I just got one recently so I could try to test this.

Having used SL24-90 on SL, SL2 and SL2-S, I cannot say that I have seen the blur you mention on SL2-S. You most likely have the latest FW installed (FW version 2.1 for SL2-S https://leica-camera.com/en-int/photography/cameras/sl/sl2-s-black/firmware; the camera should then update the lens to FW version 2.1 - see "Camera Information" in the Menu) - but worth a check. In general, I find the stabilisation good, particularly with the electronic shutter. The mechanical shutter may tend to induce some blur at shutter speeds around 1/60 sec, but 1/250 s should be ok. I turn the stabilisation off when on tripod, although many just keep the stabilisation on.

Thanks for your reply - Yes, Firmware was 2.1!

At 47mp you have significantly more resolution than the original SL's 24mp. you will need higher shutter speeds to ensure sharpness, but 1/250th should have ensured sharp images at 40mm. which mode is your stabilization in?

The IBIS mode was set on "Normal"

As everyone has said here, at 40mm & 1/250s you should be getting sharp images.

In any event, try the same settings with Image Stabilisation On & the Electronic Shutter instead of the Mechanical Shutter and see if you still get blur. Let us know.

Thanks for your recommendation - Once my SL2-S Body is back from my dealer I will do this test.

I have my SL2-S set most of the time to Auto ISO with minimum shutter at 1/250s with IBIS ON.  I handhold my 24-90mm and have shoot at all focal lengths just to get a feel for the zoom.  I have not noticed any image quality issues at any focal length.  The lens when I got it updated itself to FW 2.1 when I used it for the first time.  I am not seeing the issue you are describing.

I had a similar issue with my 24-90mm and my SL2. I eventually powered down the camera, removed the battery and lens. Put the body cap on, inserted the battery, and powered up the camera. Shut it off, attached the lens and set the IS to normal and it fixed the problem.

Hi Andrew,

thank you for this information....I will try so, once my SL2S Body is back from the dealer and will notify you, once the problem is solved!

Hello Mike, hello everyone,

got my SL2S Body back and carried out the test with Elekctronic shutter.

Setup: SL 24-90 at 70mm, aperture = 7,1, ISO = 200, shutter speed = 1/160 sec

IBIS on with Mechanical shutter resulted in slight blur
IBIS on with Electronic shutter resulted in perfectly sharp image

Seems, that under certain circumstances the Electronic Shutter is the solution.

Hope this helped.

Thanks for the feedback Josef. That's exactly what others & I have found. I'm not surprised, that's what I expected was going to be the result with this test.

BTW this is not limited to the SL2, I picked up the same issue several years ago with  the Sony A7r as well as the Lumix S1R. The issue is shutter slap & it is amplified in high MP cameras. It gets even worse with tele lenses. I use the Electronic Shutter in all outdoor shooting situations with the SL2 & SL2-S.

Well at least you've got to the bottom of the problem.

Best,

Mike

Hello,

I believe there is not much to add. I really hope that Leica implements the option of an electronic 1st curtain with the next FW-release. I think that is the only way around it.

Under most circumstances I have no problem with the electronic shutter, but especially indoors with LED-lights you'll get most of the time a zebra-pattern with electronic shutter, which ruins even every snapshot.

Cheers

Daniel
