Remember .dng is a non-proprietary file format.  Any software recognizing the latest version of the .dng spec would be able to open the raw file with the M11 profile that is embedded in the raw file.  Raw Therapee, DarkTable and GIMP are unlikely to have their own custom M11 profiles, such as we are used to with Adobe profiles in Lightroom and Camera Raw.

Yes, I know. Wiki claims that DNG is not (yet) a standard format, but is based on several open formats or standards and is being used by ISO in its revision of TIFF/EP. Camera manufaturers do not always implement the fully featured DNG format.

As I understand the DNG support of new cameras like the M11 cannot be taken for granted in open source projects. Anyway, I guess the DNG format is the best of all the worst raw formats.

.dng is NOT a standard format.  It is up to the camera manufacturer to use it and use it properly, or not.  .dng is NOT open.  It was created by Adobe and is owned by Adobe.  It is not-proprietary (don't need permission of use it) because Adobe publishes the spec.  You can download it on the Internet.  TIFF is owned by Adobe too; ISO does not own TIFF.  If ISO feels it needs a 16 bit image format preserving layers, that is up to them, but it is not .tif, but may be compatible with .tif.

I am sure the folks who do RawTherapee, DarkTable and GIMP would be ecstatic if all camera manufacturers used .dng.

No camera manufacturer feels their raw format is bad.  They create their raw format for their needs, not those of a software company.  Nikon tried to prevent software companies from working with its raw format when the D3 was released.  Photographers revolted so badly that policy was quickly changed.  You are lucky you don't own a Phase One camera.  Capture One, and only Capture One, is allowed to work with Phase One's raw format.
