Mausweazle Posted January 23, 2022 Share #1 Posted January 23, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi there, I am considering a switch from the Panasonic S5 to the SL2-S, however I have a few questions that you could maybe help with. I am a only doing stills photography and when picking up the S5, I always felt that the camera is not supporting my photography style. How does the exposure preview behave if you shoot in full manual (M-Mode, and no Auto-ISO)? Is there even any exposure preview? Will the live view AND EVF show under/overexposed? How about slow shutter speeds? E.g. If I shoot at 1 sec or maybe 1/10 sec, will I see lag/ghosting in the EVF/live view? I am asking because Panasonic has this feature "Constant Preview", that is driving me crazy. At longer shutter speeds the camera feels like it is freezing. Turning constant preview off, will result in not having an exposure preview Turning constant preview on, the camera will refresh the screen at rate of the shutter speed (e.g. 3 sec) When using M-Mode and Auto-ISO, will I be able to use exposure compensation to have control over the exposure (aka ISO)? and will it reflect in the evf/live view getting darker/brighter? Thank you in advance

Mikeksl2 Posted February 11, 2022 Share #2 Posted February 11, 2022 Hi! My wife and I own both the SL2-s and the S5. Love them both, but I much prefer my SL2-S, of course. How does the exposure preview behave if you shoot in full manual (M-Mode, and no Auto-ISO)? Is there even any exposure preview? Will the live view AND EVF show under/overexposed? EVF and LCD show any changes in exposure ( brighter or darker ) when changing shutter speed, aperture and iso. How about slow shutter speeds? E.g. If I shoot at 1 sec or maybe 1/10 sec, will I see lag/ghosting in the EVF/live view EVS and LCD go dark for the duration of the exposure time. When using M-Mode and Auto-ISO, will I be able to use exposure compensation to have control over the exposure (aka ISO)? yes. I use Auto ISO a lot in M-Mode especially with M mount lenses. I programmed one of custom function buttons for exposure compensation when I'm in auto ISO. You can also change exposure compensation in the default quick menu. and will it reflect in the evf/live view getting darker/brighter? Yes, changes in any of the exposure settings will show in monitor / EVF. All the EVF and LCD descriptions I mentioned above only apply to the regular (default setting) view. There is an "Enhanced Live View" and the brightness stays the same when changing any of the exposure values. Let me know if you have any more questions. Mike May I add that I much prefer the view through the SL2/SL2-S EVF than that of Pana S1R and S5. Actually, the optics in Leica's EVF is quite complex and expensive; almost like a small lens (cost of about 800EURO, if I recall correctly). In addition, the colour rendering of SL2-S is more to my liking than that of S5, although things can be done in post, clearly.

It is a big part of the "user experience" that makes the SLS-2 so special.
davidmknoble Posted February 12, 2022 Share #5 Posted February 12, 2022 My only add is versatility. Any of the SL system have a plethora of adapters and can take so many different lenses it becomes a great companion body to other Leicas (M, S, R). Not sure what you are referring to about the S5, but yes, S lenses can be used on the SL system, I do it all the time. The lens is for a larger format, so it uses the center of the lens, which is the best part anyway. They produce fantastic colors on the SL. But, they are true sizes, so a 24mm S lense on an SL looks like a 24mm lens because it is. On the medium format S007, the 24mm has a view more like the 19mm lens. Confusing, I know, but you get used to it. So, yes, S lenses work on the SL system with the adapter.

R lenses work similarly on the Panasonic S5, compared to any of the SL-family cameras. You lose EXIF, but that's the only thing you lose. M lenses lose sharpness on the S5, especially in the corners. That's because SL cameras have special sensors and software. S lenses are only partially compatible: they communicate with Panasonic and Sigma cameras, and the aperture stops-down, but AF does not work. These lenses have pretty good manual focus, compared to almost any other AF lenses, so it's not a huge loss. S lenses are fully compatible with SL cameras (using Leica's adapter), but they are slower to focus. 1

huwm Posted February 14, 2022 Share #13 Posted February 14, 2022 I went from S5 and don’t regret it Better viewfinder, higher resolution, Leica ergonomics Hugely more expensive though, especially if like me you keep the S5 which really is very good a 60th birthday treat being my justification I have a few m and ltm lenses and they do seem to perform better on the Leica tbh
