I found their site, but it wanted permission to show notifications (I declined, but it kept asking), and wanted me to click to show I wasn't a robot (made no difference) - and then I got a Russian page asking me questions. It may be bona fide software, but their current website looks a bit dodgy to me.

Oh shit! That's worrying to hear. I usually surf with adblockers etc. so I didn't see anything when visiting site. But I guess some heavy (and shady) advertising is expected when software is free.

And for hand conversion with Ps Auto-levels is really powerful tool. Just press ALT down and select auto and photoshop gives you a bit more creative control how it reads the image. Afterwards adjusting gamma from individual color channels can remove weird color casts.

Ps. I found out the hard way that the scanning part of the process is really critical. Use high CRI lightsource and take white balance from it. And expose frames individually with matrix metering. Removes lots of work from postprocessing.

Here's badly over-exposed shot with bad developing chems. Negative was riddled with color-shifts in every direction.

Upper one is Grain2Pixel with extra color-correction enabled.

Lower one is just white balance from border and then Auto-levels in ''enchance per channel contrast'' with snap to neutral midtones applied.

Dug out nicer negative and scanned it quickly using x-t1, bellows with el-nikkor 50mm and white phone screen. Fuji C200

''manually' with photoshop above

Grain2Pixel without corrections below

If you don't mind the slap of the mirror, the Nikon FE/FM are great choices. Sturdy, small, stylish  and cheap. But not a Leica.

I have an FM that I use occasionally.  Very solid camera and inexpensive to buy.  A great choice for someone wading into film photography for the first time.  But, as you say, definitely not a Leica.
