rcusick Posted December 27, 2021 Share #1 Posted December 27, 2021 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) I only had 15 mins to play with this. I'll try to post decent pics this week while I'm on vacation. Initial reactions - it's small and sharp... Shot at f5.6 on m10r using live view, hand held. Welcome, dear visitor! Advertisement Posted December 27, 2021 Posted December 27, 2021 Hi rcusick, Take a look here Christmas Present - Laowa 85mm f5.6 macro. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
rcusick Posted December 27, 2021 Author Share #2 Posted December 27, 2021 Description from Laowa: Laowa 85mm f/5.6 2x Ultra Macro APO is a mirrorless-designed macro lens with 28.55° angle of view for full frame. It is the smallest 2x macro lens in the Full Frame market. It weighs just around 252g (Leica M mount without caps and hood) which is super portable and handy for macro shooters. It features an apochromatic (APO) characteristic that chromatic aberration at both ‘in-focus’ & ‘out-of-focus’ is compressed to minimum. This new lens is able to focus from 2:1 magnification to infinity which can serve as both macro and portrait lens with great image quality.
Gobert Posted December 27, 2021 Share #3 Posted December 27, 2021 Nothing from the fly is sharp. You’d better use a tripod and a higher F number.
rcusick Posted December 27, 2021 Author Share #4 Posted December 27, 2021 (edited) I said it wasn't a good photo. Yes. I need a tripod... I was just trying to show an initial output from an innovative lens at 2;1 magnification with no crop. .I'll have more time with it this week. Keith (M) Posted December 27, 2021 Share #6 Posted December 27, 2021 Be interesting to see your results. At 2:1 reproduction even f22 is unlikely to give sufficient DoF (and then there is diffraction...) I imagine focus-stacking will be essential. Gobert Posted December 27, 2021 Share #7 Posted December 27, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) @Keith (M) would you go up to f22 with a macro lens? Personally, I would maximize it to F16, even with a macro lens. But I might be too careful.

FrozenInTime Posted December 27, 2021 Share #9 Posted December 27, 2021 Any thoughts on using it to digitise negatives ? Images of the lens show a cut in the mount for the rangefinder cam - is it coupled to 0.7m ?
rcusick Posted December 27, 2021 Author Share #10 Posted December 27, 2021 It is coupled...
rcusick Posted December 28, 2021 Author Share #11 Posted December 28, 2021 I played with minimal focusing distance. The focus ring works like the 35mm apo - i.e. there's slight resistance at .7m at minimum focusing distance with the rangefinder. After that you have to use live view. Otherwise range finder focusing works as expected.
rcusick Posted December 30, 2021 Author Share #12 Posted December 30, 2021 Update... I'm having issues focusing at infinity using the rangefinder. All other focal lengths are fine.... To be continued.

rcusick Posted December 30, 2021 Author Share #14 Posted December 30, 2021 (edited) LV is fine. So macro is no issue. Sometimes I want to use it as a normal prime for portraits etc but having issues at infinity. Edited December 30, 2021 by rcusick
rcusick Posted December 30, 2021 Author Share #15 Posted December 30, 2021 I tried some shots at 2:1 magnification at f22. I've decided this lens is too difficult to use with LV on an m10 without visoflex. I'm going to try my sl next.
Robert Blanko Posted December 30, 2021 Share #16 Posted December 30, 2021 Congratulations, nice gift! (If you were not hoping for a Noctilux instead. 😏 ) Macro photography is likely not the main domain of the Leica M system for most users... Nevertheless, seems to be an interesting lens which I could imagine as light and small travel companion, also or maybe even better on my Nikon Z7. Just found this review with some nice photos: https://petapixel.com/2021/12/02/laowa-85mm-f-5-6-review-the-smallest-2x-macro-packs-a-big-punch/
rcusick Posted December 30, 2021 Author Share #17 Posted December 30, 2021 I really like it's size. I also like the 2x magnification. There's nothing else like this in a native Leica mount. It's just going to be a beast to tame....
rcusick Posted January 6, 2024 Author Share #18 Posted January 6, 2024 I haven’t had the time to devote to macro recently. Let me see if I can do something quick and dirty over the weekend.
Pixelpeepl Posted January 31, 2024 Share #19 Posted January 31, 2024 I too am in the possession of this lens. I haven't used it much other than some test shots on the SL2-S. Since the mount flange has blank 6-bit capable slots milled into it, I'm in the process of looking for a suitable 6-bit code to use with this lens. Do you have any thoughts on which Leica 6-bit profile will be the most appropriate?

I managed to grab some quick sample images of the ISO dial on the M11. They are jpegs straight out of the camera. I exported them from Apple Photos to make the file size more suitable for uploading, and resized to 2480px width to comply with forum rules. Taken at the closest focusing distance with a reproduction ratio of 2:1, 800 ISO, f5.6, with SL2-S, on a tripod with a macro focus rail to aid in focusing. I had to use quite a slow shutter speed of 1/3 s because the lighting was sub-optimal. However, a 2 second timer was used to minimize any shakes from my hand pressing the shutter. The lens profile used by the camera was for the APO 35mm f2, which I'd forgotten to change. Considering the 35mm APO is quite a well optically corrected lens, I assumed the profile the camera applied to the jpeg will have a negligible impact, which may or may not affect the end result...
