Last I saw an update was supposed to appear around the end of August. Then it was around the first of September. Any idea when we will see some actual fixes? I know the typical answer is it will come when it is ready; however, it never seems to be ready.

John,

Sorry, but waiting for the next M8 firmware release is about as interesting and productive as watching paint dry. Any improvements Leica makes will be welcome -- all in good time.

Especially if the paint is still tacky after nearly a year ;)

Vinay,

To allude to another overused analogy/adage: "A pot that's watched never boils." Maybe, while waiting for the finish to finish, you should expend some of your perfectionist energy and use your M8 instead of worrying about its well-known and infinitely debatable flaws. I think you'll find it to be a more constructive activity, and it's possible that after you've clicked off a few dozen frames you'll find yourself liking the camera. But should the opposite occur, you could always sell it to an unsuspecting rube for an exorbitant profit.

My apologies for the seeming condescension and sermonizing if you actually do use your camera (to take photos) and still find it offensive to your sensibilities. But then I would be left wondering, why have you imposed this albatross of a camera upon yourself? :-)

Larry,

First, I do take pictures with my M8 and being a perfectionist I want some of its easily fixable flaws fixed. However, this also has to do with keeping promises. If I owe you money and I promise to pay you in a week and the week comes and goes and I am silent you start to wonder about my sincerity. After two weeks you probably start getting a little more than miffed. Or to use another analogy, you buy a new car that you ordered with navigation system and it is a dealer installed option. However the dealer is out of stock and promises to fix it as son as it comes in. He says it will be in within a week and he will fix it next week but he never calls. You call and speak to someone but they never call back to set up the appointment and now it is a month later. You paid for a car with Nav but have one without it. It works just fine as a car. Is a delight to drive, handles well, is well made and gets you from point A to B in style and comfort. Should you be unhappy or dissatisfied? I paid for a camera with certain features and characteristics all I ask is for them to be delivered. The fact that you don't care about them is ok with me and it shouldn't bother you that I do care about them. I'll bet if Leica suddenly offered the ability to have uncompressed DNG files (as promised in their specs) as a menu option you wouldn't say, I'll pass, the IQ/DNR is good enough for me as it is.:) Actually, given your philosophy you should never upgrade your firmware at all.

John,

Please note above that my comments were not directed at you. I'd also like to see Leica make some firmware fixes, but I'm simply not as concerned about the timeframe. Obviously, everyone will have a different opinion on what improvements are necessary and what constitutes a reasonable amount of time to execute the changes.

I have not experienced any issue with the camera that impacts my work in any way. But I shoot RAW 100% of the time. If I shot JPEG I'm sure I'd feel differently. So while any real improvement is welcome and there are some features I'd like to see added (menu selectable profiles, EV and ISO adjustment from dial, maybe access to 16 bit data). I could easily use the camera as it is now without feeling I was lacking for anything until the next firmware release.

If I am to be absolutely honest I have enjoyed the updates, as and when they arrive, for each time they add something to the capabilities of the camera. Now I would like to have just two further changes, which may or may not be possible. First is to have 14 or 16 bit Raw files, and the second is to have the ability to make the shutter (or rather the rewind) as silent as possible.

Already the M8 images knock any medium format analogue image into a cocked hat - and yet we still want more! Something to do with human nature.

Charles,

I got my four free filters in just over 3 weeks and I've seen similar times from others lately. Maybe it's the size that's making it scarce.

BTW, love your work.

Cheers,

Simon

Congratulations!--I applied several months ago and just recieved one filter last week with no info on arrival of the rest of the batch...

But in spite of Leica's best efforts (this and factory-installed filthy sensor) I still think the camera is very good (at least mine hasn't needed repairing yet...)

I'd still like to be abe to review BW DNG shots on the LCD without having to shoot BW JPEG as well as DNG; and to see clipping on the full screen LCD as an optional default, not just in the tiny pane in the info window where I have to scroll to find hotspots (after all, my tiny D-Lux 3 can do this!!).

Best
