As the tide moves out, the women and girls of Fumba Village, Zanzibar, walk out onto the reef to gather shellfish and Sea Cucumbers. When the tide moves in again they walk home with their catch, talking and. singing.

It's a charming pic Jaap.

Sadly a very quick way to turn a tidal platform into a desert, and completely ruin an ecosystem. Humans eat almost anything, and that goes from the microfauna to wrestling wales.

I've seen it many times...nothing left; another small "world" ruined. I realise through ignorance and desperation.

In this case they only harvest traditionally, as they have been doing for ages. That kind of use is sustainable, as opposed to tourism souvenir shell gathering, and above all climate change. BTW, the reefs around Zanzibar still appear to be healthy, probably because they are 1 km wide in places and the island is fairly small and not industrialized. The number of people gathering seafood is quite limited for the reef  surface that is accessible at ebb.
