Used M10 or Used M10-R

So, I’m down to the deciding call. Both silver version (which I prefer):

- Used M10 (5000 clicks on the shutter and looking mint) for 4,800-5,000 Euro

- Used M10-R (also mint) for 6,100-6,250 Euro.

Some say colors are better from one body over the other. Some say low light is best from either one.

I’m confused - what’s the call/recommendation?

Best and thanks to all on this forum,

Mads

The M10-R will do a better job with highlight recovery - the best in a Leica M so far. It also has a tad quieter shutter, 16-minute long exposure in A mode, about a stop better high ISO performance. It has a bigger megapixel count and a perspective control feature. Now of course it is up to you to decide if all these things are worth your extra euros.

Hint: They are.

The M10-R and M10 Monochrom share new sensor architecture derived from the S3. Jono described the benefits in the following article as well as in separate forum threads.  A forum search will bring up a month’s worth of discussions.

Only you can decide if the changes are worth it for you. Either camera is fully capable of superb results in the right hands.  As are the M240 variants, for that matter.

ISO capability, which you questioned, has been objectively tested and compared in various Red Dot Forum ‘ISO Showdowns’ (including your Q2 Monochrom) that have been referenced in many of those discussions.    Color, which you also questioned, is subject to many factors, including profiles used and screen/print output variables and personal tastes.

Best way to know is to demo if possible.  If this is more about want/GAS than about objective need, nobody here can help.

I agree, Jeff. If this is the rationale, then all forums can close safely - as they are a waste of time. We don’t give advice always- we just quote. It’s a matter of color preference and lens preference.

It’s all a silly mosh. Would never work as real world asvisors. But who cares - this is Leica - everything is silly, not just prices.

Mads,

Nothing logic in choosing one of these.

Hints ...

Ask yourself one or two/three questions :

- how the M10-R can give you better pictures than would plain M10

- is the M10 good enough for you

- can  the difference in price of the two be used otherwise, travel, new lens, etc.

Don’t be silly.  Of course we can decide for you!  Why else did you come here?

The thing is, once you’ve bought your camera, you’ll go out and use it without thinking about this further.  You research, you ask around, you make a decision, then move on.  You could get a demo or rent if that’s possible anywhere other than where Jeff lives!  But what’s the point?  They are both good cameras, except that the M10-R is an improvement on the M10 and the better M10-P.  If Jono says it’s better, it’s better!

So, buy the M10-R and get out and take pictures without giving it another thought.

Even Jono doesn’t replace/buy every new and ‘improved’ model. Can’t imagine how he decides without polling us. I’ve yet to have a dealer refuse an on site demo using my own SD card, some for longer free trials. But good to know that my 3 rentals in the last 12 years have kept 2 major rental firms here afloat. I have also bought used gear from some of those same dealers when longer term trial is beneficial (e.g., unsuccessful attempts to bond with a 75mm lens on an M).

Thank you all, the thing is I have read all these articles and still in two minds. 😕

There is nothing anyone can tell you that you haven't already read then.

Have you stopped to consider that you may really enjoy the decision-making process and aren't ready to give it up? Do you have a sad feeling when you think about actually making the purchase?

Either rent both and test them or just buy one and hope for the best.

The M10-R should still have a bit of warranty left?

If this is the case + the other benefits are well worth the extra 1k EUR, IMHO.
