Well I seem to have purchased a real nice M8 in chrome, I got it off ebay for $600.00 U.S., but

it has issues. First the seller said when he but batteries in after it was in the rain it didn't work.

I took the top cover off I saw now water damage at all, I did clean all the flex cables, cleaned all

those gold contacts including the ground areas. I went and purchased a battery which had some

charge left and when I inserted it into the camera it made a beep, then it said on the rear screen

the bottom was off once that was put back on it said no SD card, once that was put in it said card

was full. I know it said here that it sometimes it has trouble reading SD cards but it works this

far the only thing that doesn't work is the LCD on the top plate and the LED's in the finder. All the

info on the screen info works which is great, so once I get the charger I'll give the battery a full

charge to see where I go from here and oh I did ask Leica but the price for repair is a bit crazy so

I'll do this alone. If any of you have any advice let me know.

Thanks

That being the case, you need to bite on the bullet and get Leica to fix it, as it is unlikely that it will be done elsewhere or at home.

USD 600 is a good cheap price for a M8, so you may find it's worthwhile.

Definitely agree with this, even if it costs up to that much to repair, I believe you’ll have it under warrantee for a year, and depending on how much you use it, it could still be a great deal

This is interesting, I received a box of parts that I ordered delivered by my friendly Postman yesterday and inside it has a

almost new top cover in black and a circuit board that fits on top of the rangefinder housing inside . So tonight I switched it out

the circuit board and put the new top cover on and wow it all works and takes real nice pictures with the Voigtlander 35mm F1.4

it's a keeper.

Steven - were you trolling us ??

Lots of sincere advice that you weren't taking on board then 'with one bound you were free' and it's all fixed...

It is interesting, two very respected Leica repair people say the camera is very easy to fry even with simple mechanical repairs. For that reason they won't work on them, it does sound like a bit of beginner's luck, and an easy to reach circuit board. May your camera keep working, enjoy it!

It's also fantastically good luck to find 'a box of parts', which hadn't been mentioned previously, that also happened to contain just the right components needed to fix the job - here in the UK any M8 / M8,2 components are very hard to find - it would be good to know where they were ordered from, as it would be nice to have some spares from my M8,2..... 📸😎👍

I got the parts from a friend who's camera had a broken shutter but the rest of the parts were good. Someone above said  "beginners luck" far from that, you have to

have some skills in repairing camera's and other things I think of it as a gift.

I figured you had some skill, heck I have taken apart cameras, but getting them back together is the hard part. I was more refering to the M8, as I said two very respected Leica repair people wouldn't touch it for cleaning the lever that controls the viewfinder lens frames. both saying the camera was easy to short circuit, and not wanting to take aworking camera in and taking a chance of returning a brick. This was your camera, so you were taking the chance I am glad it worked for you.

Sorry Stephen - when you said that it was a box of parts that you'd ordered, I hadn't realised that you had in fact got them from a friend who had apparently also dismantled his camera.. does he have any bits left ?

I was also hoping you might have a photo of the rebuild (as a lot of us with M8 / M8,2 would be interested) or a pic of your newly completed camera to show us as that would be great.

Hi all,

Here's a picture of the finished camera, the old top and circuit board is in the front and new top and circuit board

in the rear. I have to say it came great no problems I even downloaded the newest firmware for high capacity cards and they

work good as well.
