M8; Compact Flash or SD

Given the association with Panasonic, SD seems most likely; I'm hoping there will be a USB port on the camera - the Sandisk Plus cards are great but I'd much rather not take them in and out all the time.

What I'd really like for use back at base is a docking cradle with a wireless gateway...

The professionals will prefer CF. But Leica might take SD. For sure. :o

This professional also prefers the SD card. There's always a "chance" with the compact flash card of damaging the pins. I think Canon got it right by including both slots in their cameras.

Memory cards are now so cheap, what's the cost of 4GB (or whatever you wish) of SD cards compared to the cost of the upcoming M8

Excerp of what Stefan Daniel said in october 2005, as quoted here: http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18928

The camera will have the same form factor as the M (M7/TTL or classic unspecified), will be 1.5mm thicker than the M due to the LCD and controls on the back. It will have a 2.5 inch LCD with buttons to the left and a control dial to the right, will have motorized shutter cocking with 1/8000 top speed and be basically like the R shutter. Menus will be like those found on the DMR, it will take a LiIon battery and SD cards.

Though I use SD cards (for backup in the Canon, for my little PanaLeica and in my DMR), I much prefer the ergonomics of CF cards at an event.

CF cards are generally cheaper, have higher capacities faster to market and don't seem quite as fragile. SD are really too darned small (I have big hands).

And I've never bent a pin with a CF card in years and years now.

But SD won't stop me buying a digital M :)

So for me, to further the '70s audiotape analogy:

"writable disc cameras" = 8 track

SD = microcassette

CF = cassette (ah, the sweet spot).

I guess that makes direct to hard drive something like open reel...
