IcemanYQQ Posted August 14, 2006 Share #1 Posted August 14, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I was just wondering if the new M8 might take Compact Flash, or SD cards. I just thought someone here might know. I have no real preference, but SD seems to be the direction of the immediate future. It also allows for a more compact design. Advertisement Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 Hi IcemanYQQ, Take a look here M8; Compact Flash or SD. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stunsworth Posted August 14, 2006 Share #2 Posted August 14, 2006 SD almost certainly.
rvaubel Posted August 14, 2006 Share #3 Posted August 14, 2006 SD almost certainly. SD for sure. I keep a backup on my keychain. And Sandisks new "plus" cards have a built in USB port. Once you try it you will be spoiled and never go back. Rex
Guest chris_h Posted August 14, 2006 Share #4 Posted August 14, 2006 The professionals will prefer CF. But Leica might take SD. For sure.
marknorton Posted August 14, 2006 Share #5 Posted August 14, 2006 Given the association with Panasonic, SD seems most likely; I'm hoping there will be a USB port on the camera - the Sandisk Plus cards are great but I'd much rather not take them in and out all the time. What I'd really like for use back at base is a docking cradle with a wireless gateway...
rosuna Posted August 14, 2006 Share #6 Posted August 14, 2006 I don't like the size and pin-connectors of the CF cards. I prefer SD cards and a portable HD for back-ups on location. I don't need a lot of cards.

This professional prefers SD and is glad that Leica has standardized on it. Cheers, Sean
IcemanYQQ Posted August 14, 2006 Author Share #8 Posted August 14, 2006 The professionals will prefer CF. But Leica might take SD. For sure. This professional also prefers the SD card. There's always a "chance" with the compact flash card of damaging the pins. I think Canon got it right by including both slots in their cameras. Memory cards are now so cheap, what's the cost of 4GB (or whatever you wish) of SD cards compared to the cost of the upcoming M8
lct Posted August 14, 2006 Share #9 Posted August 14, 2006 Excerp of what Stefan Daniel said in october 2005, as quoted here: http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18928 The camera will have the same form factor as the M (M7/TTL or classic unspecified), will be 1.5mm thicker than the M due to the LCD and controls on the back. It will have a 2.5 inch LCD with buttons to the left and a control dial to the right, will have motorized shutter cocking with 1/8000 top speed and be basically like the R shutter. Menus will be like those found on the DMR, it will take a LiIon battery and SD cards.
adan Posted August 15, 2006 Share #10 Posted August 15, 2006 SD - both because of the Panasonic connection, and because it is a better design. CF cards are to digital imaging as 8-track tapes are to audio sound.
Guest chris_h Posted August 15, 2006 Share #11 Posted August 15, 2006 All of us will take what we will get - there is not so much choice. For sure ...
IcemanYQQ Posted August 15, 2006 Author Share #12 Posted August 15, 2006 CF cards are to digital imaging as 8-track tapes are to audio sound. Does that mean my D2X is the equivalent of an 8-Track player
jackart Posted August 15, 2006 Share #13 Posted August 15, 2006 SD cards are always behind in capacity. Sandisk has already 8GB CF card and only 2 GB SD card. -Jaak
pascal_meheut Posted August 15, 2006 Share #14 Posted August 15, 2006 4 GB SD card are already available.
albertwang Posted August 15, 2006 Share #15 Posted August 15, 2006 Yes, but the 8GB CF card is twice as large as the 4GB SD card. So twice the number of pictures. Doh!
stunsworth Posted August 15, 2006 Share #16 Posted August 15, 2006 I get approx 120 RAW images on a 2 gig CF card with my Canon 5D. If you 'only' have a 4 gig card, I don't think changing it every 240 shots or so is exactly a great hassle.
albertknappmd Posted August 15, 2006 Share #17 Posted August 15, 2006 I hope it will be SD as they are superior in design and the way of the future. Leica has experience with these cards so why change a good thing? Albert
Jamie Roberts Posted August 15, 2006 Share #18 Posted August 15, 2006 Though I use SD cards (for backup in the Canon, for my little PanaLeica and in my DMR), I much prefer the ergonomics of CF cards at an event. CF cards are generally cheaper, have higher capacities faster to market and don't seem quite as fragile. SD are really too darned small (I have big hands). And I've never bent a pin with a CF card in years and years now. But SD won't stop me buying a digital M So for me, to further the '70s audiotape analogy: "writable disc cameras" = 8 track SD = microcassette CF = cassette (ah, the sweet spot). I guess that makes direct to hard drive something like open reel...
vlam Posted August 15, 2006 Share #19 Posted August 15, 2006 "'And I've never bent a pin with a CF card in years and years now. "" I did recently. Could fix it. It's a real risk. SD is more save.
albertwang Posted August 15, 2006 Share #20 Posted August 15, 2006 True but with higher capacity cards, CF is a standard for pro photogs. SD is not a bad thing but 8 GB CF cards are fabulous if I could find them!
