Focus analysis

No... shutter speed was 1/360... but is true that nothing is completely sharp. I thought that was due to the low DOF given f2 while shooting 1m from the subject...

For me the focus is closer to ARGENTIQUE than it is to PHOTO...

HI There

Try again!

Mark Norton had the idea of using a piece of graph paper with a cross drawn on it - much easier to interpret (thank you Mark)

Stick camera on tripod

focus on the cross point, then shoot wide open and then at all subsequent f stops

then do it again a couple of times (to check for user error).

Focus shift is a reality - the focus point moves forward as you stop down, which is why you need to shoot at different apertures.

Your shot doesn't really do more than make you nervous :o

I have took the following photos with my M8 + 35mm f2.

I have focused to the word PHOTO.

How would you rate the focus? I need to decide if I should send the camera to Leica for calibration.

Thanks.

Pedro, I would say there's a back focus problem.

Today I was adjusting a friend's M8 RF. We noticed yesterday that when he was using my APO 90/2 ASPH it was impossible infinity focus and most of the pictures were slightly out of focus.

After the adjustment we got this at 90/f2: (crops of M8 JPGs -best quality)

The focus points are the metal nets. On the first picture distance is 22 meters. On the second picture 10 metrers.

Just a question... which kind of 35 was used ? I ask because I have 2 of different age and optics and the very old one (1961) does focus better tha the newer (1979) at short distances... albeit only at 2 and 2,8 you can notice it (I also used newspaper)

I have used a brand new 35mm f2 ASPH.

I believe the focus is not perfect but I feel progressively less inclined to go for repair - I am generally satisfied with the results and I will simply avoid to shoot closer than 2m from the subject. Even so next weekend I will run some more tests and post the results in the forum to get advise.

I also have a 5D, which is technologically superior than the Leica (by far), but I still prefer the Leica that makes me more comfortable and creative - in the end, for amateur usage, it delivers better results.

Whenever I have a second M body and lens, I can send this one to the Leica service... since I bought the M8 I am getting increasingly tempted by the MP (or M7).

Pedro, I can't help with your focus problem more than other posters, but I did look at some of your images. I do like your eye for a subject. Will look at more as time presents.

I took the M8 and lens to the Leica service center and it is confirmed - my brand new lens needs to be repaired.

Although this problem is not pleasant I have received very good personalized customer care.

They will lend me a 35 mm f2 lens but without the 6 bit coding wile my coded lens is in repair. Will I notice a relevant quality degradation in this older lens?
