farnz Posted September 1, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted September 1, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) This is a view from the balcony of the entrance hall to the Royal Courts of Justice in the Strand in London. The feeling of space in this cathedral-like hall is overwhelming and gives a real sense of the power of the law. Â I was just staggered by the pure engineering feat of building such an edifice in the 1880s, especially the heavy, stone barrel-vaulted ceiling and the gothic stone arches that have supported it for so long, bearing in mind the rudimentary tools they had to use. Mountaineer-American Posted September 1, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted September 1, 2007 Pete, Â Marvelous photograph. Thanks a million for putting this up. The architecture is remiscent of English perpendicular of the middle ages. Lots of lovely sunlight inside the building. Very interesting to hear that the style was still being used in late 19th century. I want to see this next time I cross the pond. Â "Don't start vast projects with half-vast ideas." Mark Pope Posted September 3, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted September 3, 2007 Pete, Â smashing shot. You did really well to keep the verticals from converging. Â Cheers
farnz Posted September 3, 2007 Author Share #7 Â Posted September 3, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Arlen, Stuart, Brian, Pete, and Mark, Â Many thanks for all of your kind comments! Â Â Mark, Â Sorry to disappoint but the CV15 is notorious for gleefully converging its verticals when pointed more than 0.00000000000001 degrees above the horizontal so I pulled them back out in PS.
