I've just received the VE90-280 and I'm absolutely thrilled with the quality I'm getting. However, it is alittle short on the SL2 and I'm wondering if its a good idea to pull my old CL out of the cupboard again. Has anyone tried this for wildlife? Would I see. your photos please? I dont know how much effect it would have losing IBIS. Did you notice any other disadvantages ?

I agree, images from this lens are beautiful; I also agree that it is short for many birding photos.  I tried it on the CL but liked the results better on an

SL2 with cropping.  With the CL, I  got better bird photos using a Lumix S 70-200/4 with 2x TC.  That lens, however, I sold in favor of the 90-280.

Both photos below are at 280mm and tightly cropped.  The western meadowlark is with the CL, the egret with the SL2.   I hope this is of some help.

I’ve tried it out today and I agree that the cropped version from SL2 seems better. Not sure why really… I’m ok with the handling, it doesn’t feel too out of balance. Here is a shot with the CL today

And here is one with SL2, couldn’t get as close without cropping but overall it just seems nicer for reasons I could not describe

Ah - I think I can explain it. The CL has shutter slap which cannot be compensated by OIS. Use the electronic shutter.

Taking a tip from Jaap (thank you, Jaap!), I took the CL, with 90-280 mounted, out to the wetlands, this time with Electronic Shutter "Always On."  Here is a shot of a Black Oyster Catcher, tightly cropped.,at 280mm, f/4.0, 1/1000.  It does indeed seem better.

Also, CL files need a slightly different sharpening regime than SL2 ones - I ran it through Topaz Sharpen AI:

And this one:

Slightly front-focused BTW, the camera chose the branch ;)
