Short version:

After too much too-ing and fro-ing, having only just discovered the CL some months ago, got the L-mount bug, put off the SL2-S and told myself it was too big and heavy, after buying and enjoying the Sigma fpL and the Lumix S5 (both of which I do like) and after finally trying out the SL2-S last month I realised it was the one I should have bought in the first place. Bought it, and couldn't be happier.

Longer version:

I explain more on my latest blog, with some photos: https://rangefinderchronicles.blogspot.com/2021/08/july-2021-s5-sl2-s.html

Glad to be an SL2-S user now!

Nick - I could not agree with you more. Having used Leica's since the 70's - later switching to Canon then Nikon for news work - then back to Leica M's - and then I tried the SL2-S. The perfect camera for me. The weight is nothing to me after using Canon and Nikon systems. I only use my SL2-S with M mount lenses (Leica and others) I don't miss M bodies at all - the SL2-S finder is SO BRIGHT - focusing my fast Summilux lenses is a breeze and spot-on. Again the SL2-S weight is nothing to me. Glad you have found YOUR camera Nick!

I got mine a month ago, and I love it too. For me it was Canon (several iterations), then sony a7s2. For pure video, I had Kinefinity. Now I can combine the best of both worlds with very little sacrifices. The biggest sacrifice would be not using cdng raw video anymore; however, raw video files can be quite burdensome after awhile and 10bit 422 still does a good job so far.

Everything feels perfect with this machine, the simplistic and intuitive controls, the solid feel, the color science, all getting me excited in gadgets itself again, something I haven't felt for some time. Rediscovering the joy of the merging between gadget and photography is definitely worth the price difference with the S1H IMO. However, SL2S definitely needs to improve the AF-C in the video mode and partial f-stops for ISO/ASA. If these were implemented better, it would have been the dream camera, and I would be willing to pay up to 50% more than the current list price. 😃

As for the weight, I do not think it is heavy at all, especially when compared to carrying a canon 5D and a Kinefinity.

It didn't take long for what I thought initially was heavy-out-of-the box feeling with the SL2 to magically disappear for me too. The free M-L adapter offer is what pushed me to jump in and go, go, go..with the SL2, but I am a little jealous the SL2-S has all the lessons learned from the SL/SL2 applied. But regardless, I chose the SL2 over the SL2-S for other reasons and like you, very happy.

Mainly better performance in low light and higher ISO: better colours, dynamic range, less noise, and less ugly noise.

Additional benefits are the wider video functionality and smaller file sizes (I don't shoot to crop, and I don't print above A2).

Accidental benefits, because of the earlier roll out of better firmware vis-a-vis the SL2, are better focusing functionality and speed.

Those are the reasons I bought the S too .

And me - though less for the video. I used to be a professional film & video editor many years ago abs it means I find it very hard to make video without spending for ever carefully editing and as I never have the time for that I prefer to concentrate on photography which, while still most time consuming, is more manageable.

The better low light performance, dynamic range  and more recent sensor were the main reasons I chose the S. Due to HR of the SL2 I suspect I would regard it a bit as a (very nice) specialist camera, whereas the SL2-S has quickly become my main walk around camera.

I bought the SL2-S and kept the SL2. I’ve enjoyed having two L mount bodies. I planned to use SL2-S mostly for indoor shooting, but have found it’s getting more use than the SL2. I guess the extra megapixels weren’t as important to me as I thought they would be!

There must be a typo somewhere. This makes no sense.

I suspect that aliasing is as big an enemy for some like me as noise is for others. Quite interesting to read what those with the Nikon z6ii and z7ii and their Canon counterparts have ended up doing.  If you have both but grab only one when going out, when the bodies are the same, which would it be?

I have an SL2 & M10R...I had an m10-P before...It took me a while to adjust to the M10R & now the SL2 sensors.

I've seen several comments about selling the SL2 for the Sl2-S because of the obvious video capabilities, but what always catches my attention is they say they like the colors better.

For those of you have have made the switch, what is it about the colors that are so different/better?

I didn't have the SL2 long enough to compare the colours at low ISO and in good light - they seemed comparable - but the SL2-S just has more realistic colours at high ISO and low light, with less degradation in shadows, less colour noise, and proper skin tones. Posted this just yesterday.

?? Reads OK to me. Paraphrase: he has both cameras but uses the SL2-S more because he doesn't need the SL2's large number of pixels.

My first post here so thank you for accepting me,

I got my SL2S with the 24-70 last week and my initial impression is wow this is an excellent piece of kit with a superb image quality.

I still have my Nikon D850 and Z6ii plus plenty of glass but I’m not sure for how long as the Leica bug has bitten me.

Looking forward to being part of your community.

David.
