Nothing that I can see wrong except the disgraced American flag that is posing as “art”!

Not to get into politics, but think of how insulting this is to the men and women who have fought and died for this flag. 😞

Before you get into politics. David, a political activist and it is worth to reflect on his intent true his art.

"Beginning with a masterful piece, the lacerated American flag in the colours of the Pan-African flag, entitled Oh say can you see (2017), the show concludes with a unique installation called Minimum Security (2007), which constitutes the highlight of the exhibition. The first work responds to the folkloristic and colonial vision of the painted decor that adorns the dome, evoking slavery in the section depicting North America and decorated with a dazzling yet incomplete American flag. The second piece is housed in the old Hall of Lost Steps, at the end of the exhibition route, where it generates a particular tension with the restored remains of the original decor: the metal cage with the dimensions of a prison cell responds to the map of the world from the late 19th century, showing the trade routes used at the height of the West’s colonial expansion."

I don't want to go into politics either, but even without being a citizen of the United States, I understand that the values that this country wishes to express and live are the values of democracy, freedom, free expression, and tolerance.  Therefore, I consider that those men and women who have given their lives for that flag should be very proud that it can be unhappy, turned into art and even insulted ... because those are the values of freedom ... as one of the greatest liberal theorists said… I totally disagree with your ideas… but I would give my life because you can express them… that unfortunate flag represents the best of America….  Even though I do not like it …because just in dictatorship countries you can’t insult your own flag…

If we're serious about WB, and this is the same place (or a part thereof): https://www.pinaultcollection.com/en/boursedecommerce/members-guided-tours

1) the "vignetting" is just shading caused by a large central natural skylight, and ledges overhanging the walls and casting soft shadows.

2) it looks too red and muddy to me - but that could be the time of day, or influence from indoor LED lights, or the walls not actually being neutral gray.

............................

If we're just trolling - move it to a photo forum or to Barnacks' Bar.

Didn't offend me especially - my first reaction was the artwork was one of those inverted-color flags used (for 50 years or more) to demonstrate color after-images. Stare at it for 30 seconds and stare at a white space and see the colors reversed again. But now I see it is different.

Taking the picture into LAB colour space shows that there is a yellowish colour cast over the whole picture, which appears to be making the caucasian skin tones darker than they probably should be.  (Caucasian skin tones are usually a blend of red and yellow and the balance can be upset by too much of one or the other.)

The picture is underexposed.

Your lens (or filter or hood) appears to have produced a light vignette in all four corners.

I support what Andy has said about the skylight because there's no obvious vignetting on the floor between the corner vignettes.

Since the floor is a convenient near 18% grey the metering and AWB(?) could have been easily 'calibrated' for the picture by metering off the floor.

It's difficult to tell if there's a problem with your M10's WB because it was probably reading off the lady, the flag, the gentleman in the middle, the wall, and the floor, which is a tough task.

I hope this helps.🙂

Pete.

Hear, hear.

John Stuart Mill:

Quote

“War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things: the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth a war, is much worse...  A man who has nothing which he is willing to fight for, nothing which he cares more about than he does about his personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."

I do apologize for what I thought would have been taken second degree, so not so seriously about the modified colors of the american flag, even if I must admit that when I saw the flag I have been embarrassed, although not american.

I regret the tone the thread is going in. Art and flag are serious things not to joke with.

About the WB of my M10, it is OK. The sunny afternoon light gave that warm yellowish tone to the whole building and not the cold grey of the link Adan gives.

For information, rather than promotion the artist is  David Hammons.

I simply took the image as a comment on the way the world is going - whether you approve or not. I was drafted during the Vietnam war years, and while I never saw battle, through the mandatory draft served with guys from all races and walks of life - and we learned to get along and respect authority because w were all in the same boat. The common draft was a unifying experience, and I think eliminating it contributed to the social chaos we see today. I think all should have to do service to their country as part of the maturing process.

Thanks for your reply. Again, I didn't want to stir things up, which apparently this did.

That is the problem with the internet. We totally lose nuance through typing our responses, instead of having a discussion in person.

It would be great to sit with each other talking Leica with a good beer in hand, like we did on the "good old days"! 🙂
