fotografr Posted July 22, 2021 Share #1 Posted July 22, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've been keeping tabs on this mallard hen since her brood of nine chicks hatched a couple of weeks ago. Hawks and other predators in our area have taken their toll and there is now just one left. I think it's hard for ducklings to get to adult size. M10M, 50mm Nickel Heliar Welcome, dear visitor! wizard Posted July 22, 2021 Share #2 Posted July 22, 2021 That is truly sad. The same appears to have happened this year to a pair of swans I visit regularly. They had 10(!) happy cygnets, and when I returned 3 or 4 weeks later, NONE of them was left. Another pair of swans nearby had 5 cygnets, again none left. A further pair of swans, in an opposite direction of the river concerned, had just two cygnets, and there were still all there when I last visited them. Two out of 17 is saddening to me, but this is mother nature. 2
