lucy63 Posted July 17, 2021 Share #1  Posted July 17, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi. I was using my SL2s for the first time yesterday and accidentally touched video I guess. It made a continuous knocking, rattling noise. None of the buttons took me back to screen to change to photo mode without turning it off. I've just tried the camera in video mode again this morning, it's not set up at all and I have no idea about the meaning any of the symbols, but the camera started the knocking rattling sound which continued for 30 seconds or so when it was back in photo, esp when I moved the camera. It's quite concerning, have I got a faulty camera or is the camera in an odd setting? Thank you.

Paul2660 Posted July 17, 2021 Share #2  Posted July 17, 2021 I would contact Leica support on this.  I have a SL2, and have used it for video quite a bit, and it switches over with no sound, or knocking.  Which lens are you using?  I have mainly used the 24-90 with latest firmware.  If you have the 24-90, check to see if it has the latest firmware installed.  There was an issue with the 24-90, making a noise when the zoom ring was move, more of a grinding noise, which was fixed with the 2.1 firmware.  The fact that when you switched back to photo mode and the noise continued, implies that the camera may need to go back to Lecia. or be returned for a replacement?  Paul

I'm using the 35 SL. The camera has the latest firmware which I installed  and the lens did some kind of connecting to the camera thing when I put it on. If the camera is faulty I'll get a replacement as it's brand new.
adan Posted July 17, 2021 Share #4  Posted July 17, 2021 Sounds like an IBIS (stabilization) problem. You can test that by turning off IBIS (if that is possible with the SL2s) and seeing if the rattle goes away. Even my (normally-functioning) Canon 300mm IS occasionally rattles on startup. Bottom line, if something in the camera or lens is designed to wiggle around - eventually it may make a noise when wiggling.  But if it's new, it needs repair or replacement. Jeff S Posted July 17, 2021 Share #6  Posted July 17, 2021 (edited) Possibly same as this discussion, which if so unfortunately led to a Leica response stating normal behavior..  I don’t use video on my SL2, and set pre-focus to off. No unusual noises (except on 24-90, which FW update resolved). Jeff Edited July 17, 2021 by Jeff S
Nicky Scali Posted July 17, 2021 Share #7 Â Posted July 17, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) It is normal behaviour with the 35mm APO SL lens. I have the same issue - even when using AF on stills.

Both the the OP's camera behaviour and that linked to by Jeff appear to be unacceptable. I have no special knowledge but I'd put my money on defective IBIS rather than AF.
