I have used a few Voigtlander 50mm lenses, the best of these IMO is the 50mm Nokton f1.2 or even the older f1.1 gives a very vintage vibe. I prefer the f1.2 Nokton because it is smaller and simply better. other options from Voigtlander are the 40mm f1.4 ver I or II and also the 50mm f1.5 classic (LTM I believe) is a very nice lens indeed.

To give an idea of the rendering of the lens, a quick shot today, wide open:

I do like the Black-and-Chrome lenses from that era. I'd like to pick up one of the f1.4 examples but there don't seem to be that many nice ones on the market at the moment here in the UK. Strange because a year or two ago they could be found from almost all the Usual Suspects. Perhaps a result of increased taxation due to Brexit?...

As far as a Canon 50mm f1.8 on an M Monochrom is concerned here's a hastily rattled-off D-Lux-40 snap of my own pairing;

I'd offer to take some snaps with it but I believe (not sure, though) that the optical cell was unchanged between Jaap's style and this earlier design.

What is so special to the 1.4?

It's not the f1.8....

:)

I've no idea, Gobert. Perhaps nothing? Perhaps something? I don't have one but I'd like to try one out to see how it draws at the wider apertures.

I really like pretty much everything about the f1.8 - whether used with, say, the IIIc or the Monochrom - and suspect the f1.4 would be a very similar type of animal. The fastest Leitz 50mm I own currently is my 1953 M-mount Summarit which is, shall we say, not-entirely bland in character when used at f1.5 / f2 so the Canon strikes me as possibly an attractive - and decidedly affordable - alternative to an early Summilux. Unlike my Summarit (or a Summilux) the Canon, obviously, comes in LTM-mount and, as such, could also be used with one of my 'Barnacks'.

Tiny consideration, I know, but the two-colour finish would also be something of an attractive novelty around these parts and, furthermore, would be a nice match whether I would choose to use it on a Silver Chrome or a Black Paint body. I can imagine that using it on my 'Standardised' Leica 1 Model C would be a bit of fun....

Philip.

Revisiting this thread. My only concerns with the Canon lens recommended above are the minimum focus distance, as I often like to shoot close, and the minor risk involved in trying to locate a good quality one from a reputable source. Now on the other hand, the price makes it so tempting, it costs less than the sales tax on most of the other things I have purchased!

I was wondering though about some of the Voigtlander options that are out there now, particularly the 50mm 1.5 II, the 50mm 1.2, and the 50 APO Lanthar.

Does anyone have an opinion on these options for the M10M? I am not really interested in corner sharpness, or micro-contrast, just looking for something with a little character. Bonus points for something that will also play nicely with an SL2-S. Seems like the 50mm 1.2 is most interesting to me on paper, as it offers some of that dreamy quality wide open, but can be stopped down for more sharpness. On the other hand, with the M10M and the SL2-S, light gathering ability is not something very lacking, so maybe the APO would be a good fit?

Any Voigtlander experts out there?? 😁

I'm utterly boring in this 50mm hunt: I really like the look from the current generation Leica Summicron-M 50mm f/2, and I also like what I get with the Voigtländer Color-Skopar 50mm f/2.5. I've used my Summicron-R 50/2 on the M10 (with Focusing Bellows-R and appropriate adapter R Adapter M, or just the adapter for infinity focus) and that works beautifully too, utilizing the Visoflex 020 to provide viewfinder and focusing capability.

Of course, the Leica Macro-Elmarit-R 60mm f/2.8 works brilliantly with just the R Adapter M netting infinity down to 1:2 focusing range with no other attachments, and 1:2 to 1:1 focusing range with a Macro-Adapter-R fitted as well.

I agree with ramarren on the 50 Summicron-M V5 for character with my M10M. It offers a little lower contrast, very smooth bokeh, and nice balance on the body. Mine exhibits a little focus shift (using the rangefinder) at f/4, that's visible with my near & far tests at 200% when combined with the demanding resolution level the M10M achieves.
