Carl Posted August 28, 2007 Share #1 Posted August 28, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi! I've wanted to buy a negative scanner for many years and now I've been offered to buy a Nikon Coolscan IV in good condition for a good price. I just wonder if anyone here have any experience from it? Also, I am using a Macbook and somewhere I read that some people with Intel-macs have had problems using it. Does anyone know if that really is the case? Best regards Carl
Advertisement Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 Hi Carl, Take a look here Nikon Coolscan IV. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
herbet Posted August 28, 2007 Share #2 Posted August 28, 2007 how good is the price you're getting? the Coolscan V is vastly superior (hardware and software wise) and is really a bargain IMHO. also Coolscan V works perfect with Mac OSX 10.4.
Carl Posted August 28, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted August 28, 2007 Hi! Yes, after comparing the hard facts between the Coolscan IV and V I can clearly see that the Coolscan V is far better. But now this guy is selling his Coolscan IV and the price is 150€, you think it's worth a buy? Carl
Rona!d Posted August 28, 2007 Share #4 Posted August 28, 2007 Take it! Good price, good scanner. It has a dust-door, the new scanners don´t have, also the strip film holder FH-3 is not included with the coolscan V. I use it with my G4 Powerbook (and in the past with Intel-PCs), don´t know why there should be any problems with an Intel-Mac:confused:
herbet Posted August 29, 2007 Share #5 Posted August 29, 2007 if you're stranded for cash then sure. but that's the going rate for a coolscan IV on eBay anyway.
Jean-Michel Posted August 29, 2007 Share #6 Posted August 29, 2007 Hi, I use a 5000 ED, with my PowerMac G4 it works quite well but at much slower speeds that advertised. I expect that this will change dramatically with my new MacPro. Regardless, scanning negatives properly is a slow process and anything that canspeed that up is good. So maybe, if you can visit the vendor, connect your Macbook to the IV and see it it works as you would like. I use and recommend VueScan (hamrick.com) as the driver for the scanner. Good luck
Carl Posted August 29, 2007 Author Share #7 Posted August 29, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi! Thank you for all the comments! I will borrow it today and try it out. But I have to say that I already really feel like getting it as I've wanted a scanner for so long and I find the 150 Euros to be a good price. The thing is just that I am a bit short on cash at the moment, so even if I find the price good it's still money. Anyone interested in bying my old computer, a iBook G4? :-) Best regards Carl
DaveB Posted September 2, 2007 Share #8 Posted September 2, 2007 I've been using the Nikon Coolscan IV for film/slides for several years and am very satisfied. It does a great job. I much prefer the VueScan software to what came with the scanner. I use that for all my flatbed and film scanning.
Carl Posted September 2, 2007 Author Share #9 Posted September 2, 2007 I've been trying the scanner during the weekend and I am really impressed! I find the result really good and I am quite sure that I will buy this scanner. I just have a question: I have heard that the lamp in the scaner doesn't last for very long. Is that true and does anyone here have any experience from that? And, as I am short of cash, I try once again, anyone interested in bying my iBook G4? In good condition and availble to pick up in Hamburg, but of course I could also send it. Best regards Carl
Overgaard Posted September 2, 2007 Share #10 Posted September 2, 2007 I had a Coolscan IV for two years or more and used it a lot. Never had problems with the lamp. Nor any other problems. Today, if I got a Nikon scanner again, I would get one that can scan a full 36 frame film in one go (Some Nikon scanners you can get an attachment to mount on the pack so that a full roll of film can go through the scanner automatically in one go). I recommend you start with the Nikon software and once you are confident in the use of the scanner, have a look at Vuescan. I tried it several times but always went back to Nikon. pleeson Posted September 7, 2007 Share #12 Posted September 7, 2007 Hi, Carl. The Nikons use LED's as the light source, no lamps to burn out. $300 is a good price, I think. I use the 9000 with an Intel imac with no problem, but needs maximum memory. Don't even bother installing the Nikon software, especially the version that came originally with the IV (I did). Update the firmware if not already done. I'd use VueScan. I'd sell you another iBook if you need one -
xrogers Posted September 7, 2007 Share #13 Posted September 7, 2007 A nice scanner for a good price. The 5000 is faster, but the results are in most cases indistinguishable (I've never noticed a difference, but imagine that dense slides may differ). Vuescan lets you use multipass scanning, useful for dense slides, if I recall correctly. The Nikon software saves that feature for the 5000 only. Enjoy your new scanner! --clyde
Carl Posted September 9, 2007 Author Share #14 Posted September 9, 2007 Hi! Thank you for all the comments! That, together with trying it out, have led to the result that I will buy this scanner! I have a lot to learn about scanning negatives, but I can already see the quality and I am really looking forward to learn more about scanning! At the moment I am using the Nikon software, but I have also tried VueScan really quick and it looks promising. Advise and tipps are welcome and I post a few examples from the scan-sessions. The motives are from Sweden, Denmark and Germany and some of them are with Leica M6 and a Summicron 35mm and the others with Yashica T5: Welcome, dear visitor! pleeson Posted September 9, 2007 Share #15 Posted September 9, 2007 Excellent results thus far. Prepare for many months or years of nostalgia as you process those old images!
Carl Posted September 10, 2007 Author Share #16 Posted September 10, 2007 Thank you and yes, it's really nice to finally be able to scan my images! And the images are not old, most them are from last week. When I some day will have the time (and energy) I might start to go through the shoeboxes with old negatives....until then I like the feeling to quick and easy be able to work with my pictures without the need of a darkroom which I don't have any space for.
