How much is more?  Full 16GB?  Is that true only for M1 iPads or does it also apply to my 2020 iPad Pro?

The OS requires RAM to operate so not all the RAM can be allocated to a single app.

The 2020 iPad Pro has 6GB of RAM. This is why iPadOS 14 supports up to 5GB of RAM for an app. It needs to reserve 1GB for OS and other functionality.

I don’t know how much RAM iPadOS 15 will actually allow for a given app but if iPadOS14 is an indicator, it may allow up to 15GB but that would only apply to 1TB and 2TB models of the M1 iPad Pro since only those variants have 16GB of RAM. The other M1 iPad Pros with smaller internal storage only has 8GB of RAM so presumably, they would probably max out at 7GB of RAM for apps.

I'm struggling with my work flow I try to move the photos to a map on my IPad but it tools to long.

Maybe I should to start with 20 photos

I will check the photos before I add them in Lr.

Or is there a better way?

Either plug in your card reader into the iPad and import straight into lightroom, or if you have an SL2/SL2-S, set the camera USB mode to mountable storage, then connect the camera to the iPad Pro directly via USB to import straight into lightroom. I normally use the latter since it’s equally fast and I don’t need to dig out an SD card reader.

There isn't a definite answer to this at this stage. The developer notes indicate that some apps may request additional RAM but Apple won't necessarily grant it. It depends on the device's capabilities and other uses. They have also stated that it won't be available for all devices but haven't mentioned which devices will be able to use the extended capacity or by how much.

I have an M1 with 16gb so I'm hoping that I'll see a significant upgrade, but even if I don't, I'm quite happy with the speeds and functionality I already have. I know better than to purchase hardware with the hope that future software will catch up, particularly with Apple's reluctance in letting iPads take on too many features and capabilities of Macs.

On my recent holiday I decided to store the photo's on the ipad, do some on the spot review with LR mobile; and then later take the files off the ipad.

So, yes, I connected the Imac to the Ipad, selected import in the LR - and it allowed me only import from Photo's . .  So I selected those, but no monochrome came across, and many DNG-imports were renamed IMG, had low saturation, skin tones greyed out . .  horrible workflow. The JPG's were fine.

So I started to make a copy with file exchange to an SD card; but oh my that takes forever, and with seeming duplicate files in the original folder, there will be errors in the exchange, you have to check if there are not unfinished transfers by hand (a DNG will copy only 360Kb for instance and then stop).

  • So placing the iPad in the workflow is not good.

However, I like the Lightroom Mobile editing features very much, nice handsome sliders.  But I'm afraid all mobile editing is lost.

Well, depends on the workflow. In your described use case it is indeed very easy:

1. Import to the iPad as you have done.

2. on the iPad, edit the photos as you like and put them into an album for which you enable synchronizing

3. on your Computer, open LR Classic and go to albums - you should find a group called "from Lightroom CC" and in this group you will see all Albums that you have created on your iPad. Make sure that your LR Classic has enabled synch as well and that you are logged in with the same username in the creative cloud app.

4. Go to the album where you did put the photos from step 1 & 2. Once both iPad and LR classic have finished synchronized you have the photo with all your edits also on the computer. However, the DNG file itself is still on the iPad. Now comes the magic...

5. Go to the file section in LR classic and select or create a file on your hard disk where you want to physically store the DNG file.

6. Go back to the album "from LR CC" and drag and drop the pictures to the file identified above and let Adobe do their magic. Voila, all your files are where you want them and no edits lost.

7. As the cloud space in the normal Tarif is limited to 20GB after the transfer I recommend to delete the picture from this transfer album and from the iPad.

I have the perpetual problem that version 6.14 ;) comes with. There I see no CC albums. [yet]

To show the woes of copying files manually - this is how some files were copied on the SD-card:

And yes, they can be opened on the ipad, but with all the hassle I now can hang a Modern Master on my wall. On the iMac the preview is OK but the file open up like above.

  • On the ipad the files are normal.

So the route to store files on the iPad is problematic to say the least. I grouped the images in groups of 120; to copy them separately. Once only 68/120 came across; another time the ipad decided to restart itself. Next time I'll take a portable with me again :( - not nice if you want to travel light, and use a SD card that does not take 3 - 4 seconds startup-time.

By the way, the problem I mentioned of importing wrong names/profile from the iPad, post 25:

  • backup of the catalogue will also restore faults (it did some magic for me last night too (imported files seen as IMG## and without profile were later correctly named & well profiled)
